So i noticed something unusual today while sorting out a few loose sockets
kingdickoddsize.jpg

These two sockets are much larger than the indicated 14mm and 18mm.
I can fit a 14mm socket inside the one marked 14mm - with room to spare and the 18mm is nearer to 26mm.

No other markings other than Chrome Vanadium KING **** British Made

am i missing something here?

Actual bolt size not the socket size? What do you expect from a ****.

i think this could be the most likely answer (other than being miss-stamped) as they came in a lot with a bunch of whitworth tools.
A bit odd to be mixing the two up though isnt it?

If you look at their website those are probably "Whitworth" sizes, meaning the 14mm is the actual bolt size.

Grew up using King ****, their spanners were the only ones that really felt "just right" on battery terminals on British Cars :)

Perhaps square bolts? But I think the whitworth answer is the correct one.

I don't think it's Whitworth because they are metric.
its not unheard of - i have a few metric threaded bolts with whitworth sized heads in my sidevalve engine (thats why you never let the French and British work together)

a bit more info i will add
the hex part isnt all that deep maybe about 16mm. The rest of the socket has a rubber tube in it - possibly sparkplug sockets?

Sure it's unheard of, it's a different measuring system, it's probably similar just a different standard.

nope defiantly metric threads with whitworth heads
All the threads on the engine are metric due early components having a French ancestory. The bolt heads however are Whitworth. This is because the early Morrises used a Hotchkiss French engine which naturally had metric threads. Presumably it was easier to tool up nuts and bolts with standard Whitworth heads than to equipe the assembly lines and vehicle tool kits with metric tools.

I don't think you are getting what I'm saying, and I might be wrong, I'd like to know. It's my understanding that Whitworth is a standard that wouldn't use mm, plus wouldn't there be a W?

Someone send an eMail to King **** and ask them about these sockets.

I'm not sure of the exact years but he actually bought 3 of them in a pacage deal:

1. Coupe
2. Woody Wagon
3. Pickup (these seem to be more rare than the woody wagons)

How bout a catchy phrase for a King **** tool truck. "Let me put a King **** in your box." Or "Nuthin get's your nuts off, like a King ****." Geez, I could go on and on with this one.

14mm and 18mm are both spark plug thead sizes.

:withstupi

I bet this is the answer, or somehow related.

To the OP, suggest taking measurements across the internal flats on the sockets, to give us some idea of the "actual" size.

The sockets pictured are spark plug sockets. The 14 mm and 18 mm refer to the thread diameter of the spark plug. That is the way plug sockets are marked here in britain. Metric sized tools will fit most whitworth bolt heads. 5/16" whitworth is = 15 mm ,7/16" whitworht is=21mm or 13/17" AF, for example
Rubber insert is to grip stem of the plug and hold it in socket.

There is usually misinformation spread around when it comes to Dicks. For instance, it's common for someone to say "This here **** of mine is 9...maybe 10" when actually, it probably measures half that.
Whatever the sockets say, they are bullshitting you.
