Whats wrong with Thermostat wiring?

I have a typical A/C heatpump condenser unit here in Arizona...ever since I installed my Sensi thermostat, the heat has never worked.

After many years (haven't needed it), I really want it to work now.
A/C works fine, fan works fine. If I put it in heat mode, the blower motor runs, but the condenser unit never turns on.

Here is the wiring on the board at the condenser unit and the wiring at the thermostat. Anybody know if some wires are mixed up somewhere?

Would be a great help!

you got green hooked to green on one end and white on the other...

I would explore that possibly.

Obviously the wire jacket color means nothing, but is your thermostat putting out a signal on the green terminal that your HVAC unit is expecting on the white terminal?

Isn't green for the Fan though?
I don't have a "G" on the mainboard, so which color on the mainboard is forcing the blower motor fan on?

All the wiring on this (20-yr) old heatpump is confusing.
C = Common (Brown)
R = 24vac (Red)
Y = first stage heat/cool on heatpump (yellow) < ????
O = Reversing Valve for heatpump < ????
W = ????

I feel like somethings miswired, but I don't really understand where the fan gets power from, so I dont' want to mess with the wiring until I know whats supposed to go where.

You should refer to the install manual for this thermostat.

Some thermostats need jumper wire between Y and O for a heat pump setup.

Also need to verify wiring at control board inside your air handler.

So I went into the attic just now to look at the wiring up there in the handler unit.

I assume one of the wire looms goes to the thermostat, and the other to the board on the condenser unit then they meet up in the attic to pair up with the blower motor?

Red's pair up -- 3 wires total (one other thicker red wire)
Blue's pair up -- 2 wires total (no other wires)
Orange pair up -- 2 wires total (no other wires)
Yellow pair up. -- 2 wires total (no other wires)
Brown pair up. -- 4 wires total (two other thicker brown wires)
White pair up. -- 2 wires total (no other wires)

Green are NOT paired up (see box)
ONE thicker white wire is NOT attached to anything (see box)

Sorry I am just not A/C pro here...

W is heat. You have it hooked to the green wire which is hooked to fan (g) on the stat.

Get the W terminal on the board connected to the W on the stat. Normally would use the white wire.

**Edit never mind, I see the last post and it's a heat pump.

Is it just the backup heat strips that don't work? Or does the heat pump not switch over from air-conditioning?

If I switch the setting to heat, it doesn't work. The system doesn't run in reverse, or at all. The blower motor runs, but the the compressor doesn't turn on at all.

So I looked closer in the attic blower motor box...the unconnected green wire is the one from the thermostat, so right now that green wire goes nowhere.

Should I connect it to the thicker Dark Green & 22ga green wire nut? When I follow the dark green wire that goes to the thicker dark blue wire into a (relay?) that goes to the blower motor itself...

No idea if this helps at all....or if the blower motor green wire would have any influence on why the heat isn't working

Start by checking at the thermostat. See if you are getting 24v at both Y and O when the thermostat is set to heat.

Y is compressor and O is the reversing valve.

Fixed! I had the settign in the thermostat to A/C1 instead of Heatpump...turned on!
I think when I didnt have a c-wire it didnt work on heatpump but did on AC1 so I must have left it on there.

Still don't understand how the fan runs being that I don't have a "G" wire on the condenser board...but its working now so I'm happy after 3 winters without heat....(not that a Phoenix winter is really a winter....)

G is just to run the fan only. If your running heat or A/C the fan runs anyway

Did you use the Sensi app when installing? And take a pic of your old wiring? And match the wires in the app? And add the stickers on the old wires where the app told you to when taking out the old stat? And told it about your configuration (heat pump)? If you followed the app install, it should work fine.

Source: I've installed two Sensi, the most recent last Saturday, lol

The control board turns on fan in heat or cool. If green wire hooked up you can run fan separately on its own.

Glad you got it figured out :thumbup:
