I see these older snap on flat ratchets bringing 1/3-1/2 the price of normal ones.

Why don't people want them as much?

I have a so ratchet that looks similar. S-71. It has the same # of teeth as the newer contour handle rats. I also have an SL710 that has an identical mechanism but the newer handle. They are still good strong rats just coarse tooth.

Strong low tooth count ratchet. I have had 3 sizes for many years without issues. No warranty but there is a thread on here somewhere to cross reference rebuild kit numbers if the need arises. The 3/8 is a relatively short handle for some reason and is handy.

That ratchet is covered under warranty. Most "government" industrial tools are marked. The reason the don't bring as much is because they made them for 25 or so years. And they made a bunch of them.

Unless you are a collector, why would you want them? I love Snap On ratchets, but I'm not inclined to buy an antique ratchet when I can get one that is light years ahead of those for $15 at Harbor Freight.

Use it and compare it to the new dual 80's and you will figure out why they are cheap. Uncomfortable, low tooth count, bulky etc. Just because its a snap on doesnt mran its expensive. If i had one id sell it foresure only because i don't collect tools i use them...

In your basement...seriously, go look now!
They might have some value to a collector but not much - they are pretty common, have little advantage compared to their age-related counterparts (rare Snappies), have a low tooth count (lucky to top out near 60t, most around 40t I believe), and are not in terrific shape. That's why they are relatively cheap.

Here is a somewhat newer snap on 10" 1/2 drive ratchet, model l-710.

These only go for about $20.

Let me guess...no one wants them due to low tooth count?

40? Lol. I counted 24 in my S-71. Same as the newer SL710 with contour handle. I am a machinist I use the ratchet mostly for loosening and tightening 7/8 case hardened flanged nuts used to clamp workpieces down. I don't have to worry about space or # of degrees between each click. I went for the old Snappy because I like them, they are tough as nails, and it was $20. It replaced an SK 3/8 round head and does a better job.

Where are you finding those for $20? They are a lot higher than that on ebay.

Those things got the ergonomics of a 2x4 stud and **** in real use. Makes a raised handle Craftsman ratchet look good.

First time I've ever heard that!:lol_hitti

The one I had was a 20 tooth count. Not fine action but tough. I asked Snap-On if there was an upgrade gear available, any higher tooth count. The lady said no.

I came across a few of them when I was in the Army working as an aircraft tech back in the 1980's. I think they were originally suppose to be for fixed toolbox kits that went with a specific vehicle and meant to be used only as an emergency as needed basis. The few times one would show up in a new mechanics flight line daily use tool kit, was usually "broken" first thing or swapped out with another ratchet in another tool kit.

Not well loved from my memory.
