Hey guys I'm wondering what your favorite or most used diagnostic tool is?! If we could leave out scan tools and multi meters that would be great consider in they a necessity. But if they are your favorite I suppose u better say so!
My computer with internet connection and downloadable shop manuals. Leak down tester is fun to use. Compression tester has saved me a bunch of $ with small engines and outboards.
Beyond the two you eliminated, I don't have a favorite. Fuel pressure and spark testers are important, early in a diagnosis. Vacuum tester/gauge is probably my most broadly useful.
Barring scan tools and mutimeters diagnosis in general would have to be my air-powered cooling system pressure tester... Strictly related to drivability tools, gotta say fuel pressure gauge.
Most of these tools are all required to diagnose properly. My favorite is probably the power probe 3. Cuts alot of diag time out of electrical diagnosis.
With fuel injected car a noid light. Easy to check for spark without a tester and pressing a test valve can spray me with fuel to show some pressure. Noid light tells me all sensors are working good enough to fire an injector.
Power Probe is a great investment as well.
For common issues Google is your friend. When family or friends call with a car problem a quick online search tells me in 5 minutes what I am probably in for without even having to go look at the car.
Torque Pro app to my android phone. Cost $5.00. It's connected to my car's OBD II post via a Bluetooth adapter. It's a poor man's scan tool. It has saved me hundreds of dollars.
