Hazet, Facom, Beta, Kennedy and others make them. But I'm not paying crazy money for a metal box, so I have a couple of the Excel versions:

The small one in the picture is my in-the-race-car toolbox and I've also got a larger one as my grab-and-go box for household stuff.

After tons of experimenting and a few hundred bucks, this is my favorite.

I've got two of them in the gangbox, one for my alignment stuff and one for the "always need it" tools.

For just a basic box, the Israeli made $9 "Homer Boxes" at Home Depot are pretty hard to beat.

I've got the EXACT same Excel box. They're cheap and hold a surprising number of tools.

Keter makes some nice stuff, bought that Work Table but it's still in the kitchen NIB. I have tried med.-lrg. C'man chest but they are too noisy, actually don't hold that much. I am now going to try 3 Husky 16 pocket tool bags with zipper on top. I will setup each according to it's vehicle. With them rubber feet these should be mutch quiter. Only problem I see at this time is they don't lock and can be carried away easier. Now I need to look into real good alarm system for my 88' F350. I will start a thread on it.

I'm in the process of looking for a sturdy 16-19" tool box. Trying to get ideas from you guys.

I have the CMan version of that box, only difference the top has compartment bins. I also have a couple of open plastic totes from Snappy with a drawer in the bottom.

the CM top box ($25 lea mkt find) is about as portable as i get as far as toolboxes, i can get enough tools crammed into it, that i can barely pick it up.

the kennedy cantilever ($9 flea mkt score) is full of supplies, everything from elec connectors, brake line fittings, to spare ujoints for my trail truck.

i have a couple of tool bags if all i kneed are a couple of screwdrivers and a pair o pliers

.

An old British made Enox box I got from the local secondhand shop.

I use an old tackle box that looks like this, but it's a little smaller. I like metal construction with a sturdy handle. The previous owned glued **** carpet to the bottom to prevent sliding on you vehicle's trunk. It works well.

I've got an old cman cantilever box that holds most of my plvmb/proto l.a. collection.
That one is my favorite, mostly because of what it contains.
There's so much in it though that it isn't too portable anymore.

I'm planning on buying the Dewalt one hand opening box....I think it will be a good tool box to carry in the backseat of my truck.

I have a few of the craftsman versions as well, but mine are similar to the box pictured. They are awesome.

I've carried one of these in the back of the truck for the last couple years. I used to keep a craftsman 2 drawer metal box, but I've found that, personally, having a soft bag cuts down on clanking around and is easier to carry around. I also keep a craftsman 155 piece tool kit with the plastic case in the truck. Inside of the open area at the bottom I have a whole assortment of open ended wrenches and screwdrivers.

This is my go to portable toolbox. It's a Craftsman 4 drawer red and black box (I added the tray a few weeks ago).

For emergency repairs and portability, I can't find a better kit than the Craftsman 154 piece. If you add in an impact skt for your lugs, extra wrenches up to 1" and 24 mm, 8 inch & 10 inch adjustable wrenches, set of pliers (linesman, needle nose & slip joint) and some extra swivels/extensions, you can take apart most anything on a modern car, and its cheap too.

My "wrecking yard tool box" for the past 25+years has been a home brew tool roll I had SWMBO stitch up for me so I would not aggravate the "Tennis Elbow" I had at the time from carrying a heavy bucket of tools around the yards.

Rolled:

Open and the tools pulled partly out so you can see them:

The roll itself has doubled as a rag any number of time in a pinch as well! It washes, so...

These days I also have a Craftsman 90 pc. metric set with a pile of additions as a "Road box" I set that up after I finally got an all metric rig for hunting/daily driving. I've posted it several times and the pics are not handy just now, and I don't feel like digging the box out again...

I have so many that I really don't use one over the other. I have different tools stored in all of them. I picked up a brand new Kennedy $120 fold out box for $10 several months back. I put all my electrical tools in it. I have all the wire clips, nut and hand tools in it. I don't have my knock outs for boxes in it because they will not fit but I do keep my testers in it.
I have a cabinet shop and have made wood cases for all of my power tools. Most have drawer under the box for bits, blades etc. I make up wood working boxes all the time. I have one for finish work, one for hanging doors. I have old craftsman boxes and boxes for JC Penney's I have one of the plastic blow mold boxes form Sears. I paid $3 for it at the swap meet. It is like new. I went through and filled it with old Craftsman sockets. I have it full in every space I have deep sockets, speed wrench and breaker bars in the bottom and I use that one and a Craftsman that has all the pliers and wrenches in it. The two of them are now my road boxes. I have every socket size and wrench size up to 22 mm and 1-1/4" I have a hose clamp, crowfeet and hex wrenches. There is not much I can not rebuild with the 2 boxes. I take the 2 plastic boxes out on the boat and they do not dig into the fiber glass. They are nice in the trunk.

A box is a box as long as it meets my needs. They all get heavy and I always have too much in them.

My best tool box is my construction trailer. It has a small shop built in.
