I'm looking for one to buy one but I can't tell which is junk. I just need one that is accurate enough to get the jobs done.

Thanks

I was recently looking for the same and was going to buy this one from Amazon.

Inductive Hour Meter for Marine ATV Motorcycle Dirt Ski Waterproof (red) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A43PKO4/?tag=atomicindus08-20

The price is lower on the brighter colors.

What I like about it is it also an hour meter and can be permanently installed on the motor. Or if needed moved to each motor.

Easy to use just wrap wire around spark wire and it measures induced current.

Those Vibratchs are OK, they're all we had back when I was a small engine tech in the 80's and I still use one every now and then when I don't have a rotating component easily accessible. But technology has moved on, and I use the one below most of the time now. That thing is the cat's ***. It not only will measure optically using a small bit of reflective tape, it also has interchangeable tips that you can insert and measure rotation mechanically.

Price isn't too bad for what it is.

What exactly are you gonna use it for?

A tiny tach is probably the cheapest option, but they aren't very responsive.

Was thinking of getting one of those. Where do you find reflective tape refills?

It comes up in every thread he posts in. Its east coast fishing village speak for yes. He won't stop.
I find it quite helpful - when I see the word "AYUHHH" as the first word of the post, I know it won't be followed by anything remotely useful, so I just stop reading and go to the next reply.

Gotcha. I've seen him post before and always wondered what it meant.

Lol, thanks for the tip!

If its only an every once in awhile thing the Tiny Tach works fine. If its for a shop the Tiny Tach isn't robust enough. The wires will break from the repeated use. In fairness the thing is actually suppose to be permanently mounted to a piece of equipment instead of being used as a portable tachometer. I actually haven't used a digital tachometer that I've liked and likewise I far prefer to measure ignition pulses than a rotating mass.

For my money I really like the Oregon 42-423 unit. Its Canadian made and pretty accurate. Point it at the plug wire and hold a switch, simple as that. Just dont drop it or you'll be buying another.

Skip the Tiny Tach - it's meant for perm installs, and is slow to respond, as easy as you think it is to install to use temporarily, it isn't... and it's not inexpensive.

Check out Here and Here

I believe the fast tach is the one that was labeled and sold by Stihl and Husky for dealer service.

I've got a vibratach too - still not very good using it tho- I borrow another tech's Stihl digital when I really need to know.

i've got an old mechanical stewart warner tach, came in a wooden box with a half dozen tips. if you keep your eyes open at old man yard sales you can still pick them up. very robust, and usually cheap as nobody knows what they are for. I gave $5 for mine...

Which is why he is on my ignore list. If I want to listen to that stuff I will watch Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks.

You guys can be mean. Lots of net speak that is stylized in one form or another. Not all posts are gonna read like an email to the boss.

On the tach, you can probably pick up a cheap tach off a go kart forum or eBay. They work on spark impulse, if that's the proper way to put it....ayuh. :D
