Whats your innovative ZIP-TIE storage solution?

Looking for some good ideas on how to store lots of different size zip-ties up to 18inches.

My requirements:
1. See through
2. Compact (within reason)
3. Single container
4. Portable

Ziploc heavy duty freezer bag. Only take up as much room as the zip ties inside. Can "form" to whatever else is inside my toolbox. Crude but effective.

Kraft Parmesan cheese (aka. the nasty green lid sprinkle cheese containers as my daughter calls them) containers (once emptied and with the label ripped off) gets you everything 6" and under and clear from the outside.

For zip-ties over that I check out the Dollar Store for their upright pasta storage containers in clear plastic for cheap with a lock lid.

That's usually 12" to 15"+/-.

18" gets into specialty containers or cut dowq PVC or clear acrylic tubes with a glued on end cap.

Still not a lot of $$$.




EDIT:

BTW, if you or any friends drink high end bourbon or single malt scotch, the metal ended cardboard tubes that the bottles come in make WONDERFUL zip tie bins, especially for the long ones if no lid on the tube.

Nothing innovative here, just simple. Leave them in the plastic see-through bags they come in, and toss the bags in a large shallow drawer. You can see them all when you open the drawer, and grab the one you need.

I use these cases for a lot of things. They work GREAT for zip-ties.

I bought this one @ Harbor Freight, I think it was around $8.

I did have to trim some plastic from the little inside trays to fit
the longer zip-ties and that worked out fine.

I also have room for some zip-tie tools. These cases have held up
very well under several years of heavy use.

And without me sounding "terse", a "****", or an "***" zip-ties are indeed a "get what you pay for" thing sadly.

I stock a tonne (for Rico and Moose LOL) of the good 3M stuff. And it is worth it.

I also have many of the Xmas stocking stuffer tubs as above. Too many to count in fact .

They do in a pinch, but, hey, break that small zip-tie **** out of that mess of bins and into parm cheese containers and let them live and be found. Trust me.

In the road box I use one medium size tie around 20 or 30 of various sizes.

I use old metal table legs turned upside down and screwed to the wooden floor of my van,
I cut them to the correct length for the Tie wraps I carry and leave an inch of tie wrap poking out, even new table legs cost pennys from homebase.

I've got an old tube-container, like in RVDan's pic. It works well enough for me.

I leave mine in the original bag. I cut a 'V' in the middle side of the bag - just big enough to pull a zip tie through without tearing the plastic bag.

Depends which bunch of zip ties. The ones say for my shop and just in a cardboard parts pin ziptied together. The ones in my truck I bunch together the same way and put in the 12v/120 bag.

I use the containers that Bode's treats come in, they're the same as racquetball containers. Different one for each color. I also have a few small coffee containers for the 3" zip ties. They all go o a shelf in a cabinet.

In my turn out gear at work and truck tool bag, I have a zip tie around a bunch of them.

I have 2 containers like this. The small zip ties are the only ones worth a damn. However the containers work very well for cheap and expensive zip ties.

Dammit Eric, I forgot about the clear tall tennis ball and shorter raquet ball containers.

Since I no longer have a yellow lab I have no need to buy the balls. LOL.

I've seen zip tie holders online that are made of metal, and either hang from your box or sits on your bench, but they run over 50.00 each I think they were on www.pitstop.com site. Rich

It may be a little wasteful but I bundle the zip ties with a zip tie, then take one of ties on the outside layer of the bundle and make a ring/loop of it, with which I hang the bundle of ties on my tool pouch or a convenient hook or nail. I just tighten the securing tie as I use from the bundle. I have done it this way for many years.

Also when working with a lot of zip ties I sometimes jam a good sized bundle of them between my watchband and my arm. They are easier to reach there than in a pocket or pouch and leave both hands free to work. I have bundled lots of cables in my lifetime (much of it with lacing twine, back before zip ties).

If they ain't got stainless locking inserts I don't want them. And I only stock two sizes 6" and 12" long give or take. Sure I waste a little money here and there using ties that are bigger than they really need to be but it beats tieing over $100 in stock and finding someplace to store them all.

I keep some of mine, along with a bunch of other electrical ****, in a couple of those boxes. Then in bags hanging on nails behind the bench for general use. And also keep a zip tied bundle in the bag I use for portable wrenching.

Since I no longer have a yellow lab I have no need to buy the balls. LOL.

Yeah the real tennis balls hold up a lot better. My JRT can destroy a doggie tennis ball in an afternoon. The real ones last until he looses them or the neighbors Weinie dog steals them.

I second bundling them up and wrapping a zip tie around the bundle. Take up less space in the tool box than anything else. Plus there is no possible way to get the wrong size even by an inch.

Mine wouldn't meet your needs but its a far simple solution... Pringle's cans. Firstly, if I need an 18 inch zip tie, then its just a matter of using two 12 inch zip ties. I only buy one color, and that is the black ones, because I've found in my experience that they tend to last in sunlight better than any color. That means I don't need to see what I am grabbing. I always know its gonna be a black zip tie, and it's going to be a matter of how many, lol. I guess it relates to my choice of paint as well... Flat black (rustoleum brush on (or foam brush roll-on as I prefer) Duplicolor spray flatblack, black Plasti-dip or what Krylon sells with the chrome cap, because it does a darn good job of looking like aluminum, lol.

My solution, just mounted whatever boxes were available, on a sheet of cardboard, making it also portable.......may even shoot some paint on it some day.
