So by trade I am a mechanic so I understand electrical principles, But I also know I am no electrician. So all I want to do is add about 2-3 110v receptacles and 2-220v receptacles in my garage. Understanding more than just the basics in electricity( although in 2 different trades) should I do this myself or hire an electrician?

thanks

Everything you need to know is available in print. As a mechanic, I am sure you can follow diagnostic and repair manuals, so you can understand basic wiring. Read up and do it yourself, you will learn skills that will help you for years. I am a proponent of reading and doing things correctly.

Wanted a couple of extra outlets in my 2-car garage, but had never done any wiring before. Read everything I could and ended up doing it myself including this subpanel:

i dont need a sub panel though do I? im not setting up a crazy shop or anything.... plus I only have 100 amp service.

I only want a compressor and a construction heater in there.... Then the little things like a drill press and such. Maybe a welder too but never would I use evrything at the same time,

Go to your local library and check out a basic book on wiring. Read it. It should answer all your questions, if you have trouble understanding the book then by all means hire someone.
I read the entire NEC book before I built my home 11 years ago.

How close is your garage to your main panel?

If it is RIGHT there then I would run branch circuits from the main. If it is like mine: through 2 doors, down stairs and across the house...I would run a sub panel.

Another consideration for a sub-panel, or not, how many spaces are available in your present main panel?
