you guys make it damn hard for a bloke who is planning on building a garage & planning the set up. just when I think I have it all worked out I see more ideas on this site & start planning all over again. But thanks, some of them are awsome.

here's my new benches. excuse the mess, things are still in disarray . i'm in the process of getting things back on schedule with my workload, getting things arranged in the shop & still have numerous boxes & a storage container full of things from the fire that need going thru & cleaned up. it's been a long road...

i just finished this yesterday. these were some of the kitchen cabinets from my mother in law's house that were removed after some flooding last year. the contractor was padding his bill as there was absolutely no damage on these & was going to throw them away. i bought 16 ft of this countertop new from lowes for $40 after an "insider" tip that they were rearranging their countertop aisle & marking down the leftovers. i still have to build a sliding base for the sewing machine to bring it up level with the top & can slide it out & insert the cutout piece & have a large sewing area. total price= $40.

i picked up two of these 4 ft steel lyon benches off craigslist for $90 each in like new condition. right now, one has bolt bins stacked on it until i build a steel base to hold them permanently. the other is a "marshalling point" for items from the fire to come in, be sorted & cleaned etc. total price= $180

this will be my welding table. before the fire, it was the stand for my milling machine. i sold the mill cheap but kept the table. my new mill has a stand so will add another piece of 1/4" steel tp the top along with some casters & paint the lower part. total price= FREE!

this has to be my most used workstation & best investment to date. its a jet 3'x5' hydraulic lift table. it's great for unloading heavy items from a truck to the ground & doubles as a workbench to do bodywork on motorcycle tins. got a deal on this for $400 new (retail avg $600-$700) when i bought my other equipment. it was new in the box, but had been left outside in the weather until the box fell apart. after some cleanup & a little steel wool to the chrome handle, it was perfect!

Nice work benches. These are the type of bench I worked at the shipyard. They hold a ton of weight and last forever. Not that expensive new. Check it out

yeah, $365 each isnt that bad considering the quality. i still like what i paid better :bounce: thanks for the link. after seeing the steel drawers in the "accessories' priced at $89 each, i'm glad i saved the two decent ones from the fire & refurbished them to hang under one of these benches. i also saved the legs from the burned benches. they are heavy duty steel & you never know when you will need to make another bench, table etc.

here are the two benches i had that burned. the one up front got it the worst. only salvaged the legs from that one. the other would have been in good shape except for the water damage. the butcher block top swelled up & fell apart, so saved the legs & drawers from that one. you can see the "new" welding table sitting next to the bench in the second pic.

I know I have seen that green somewhere before. :puke: :bounce:

I knew that was coming.

I actually chose that color because that was the color of the heater and light fixture beside it when I moved here.

I will admit, I might have used this color anyway after seeing Jacks garage.

The only bummer is that we were going to get some reno's and updates done to the house and garage and figured we are better off knocking it all down and building new in spring.

I am excited to be getting a house twice the size exactly how we want it and a garage about twice the size also but damn... I am not looking forward to redoing the garage.

And the new garage will be mostly that green too!

I guess I technically have four benches in my shop. Being a LISTA distributor, our entire shop is LISTA based.

Bench 1 - 114" long x 35.5" high which is currently loaded with GTO and Viper parts. I used two drawer cabinets as bases; the one on the left for hardware and the one on the right for parts storage during a restoration project. The big cabinets to the left are for bulk storage; the lower one has heavy duty 400 lb. capacity roll out trays which make it easy to load in transmissions, and other big heavy parts. There are two 4-speed transmissions and a lot of my 67 GTO stuffed in there.
Bench 2 - 60" long, 42" high and serves as both my toolbox and beer drinking bar. I bolted two cabinets together, out on 6 swivel casters and a SS top.
Bench 3 - 60" long and 16" deep. I use this as my paint mixing and prep station. The cabinets are basically wall mounted overhead cabinets; the bottoms with top mounted handles. Makes a nice compact work area.
Bench 4 - 42" long. This is where I keep my car cleaning and detailing stuff. The pic shows it with a wood top but that is now a SS top.

The last two pictures are of my old bench and desk before I renovated the shop. We sort of went from the Flintstones to the Jetsons and loving every minute of it.

Regards,
Joe

Here is the skelatal consturction of what i got going. I need to finish the face frames for the drawer bases out of poplar (cheapest hardwood i could find), then i can band the front of the plywood top with 1x2 maple.

For those that have Lista cabinets....i hate you (man I wish i could buy them, but $$)

They look great to me. Lista is cool for industrial workshops but most active home shop cabinets are made of wood. I wish I could buy a new Ford F350 but my old VW truck works fine for me.

Been spending time checking out antique shops instead of posting on garage journal like I should be. I find lots of industrial workbenches being recycled into furniture. What with industrial building being converted into expensive loft condos, people are looking for something that fits in with the building.

Almost done with this one. It just needs some trim. A combination of dressed up CL and garage sale cabinets, three layers of 3/4 OSB subflooring (I'm somewhat poor at the moment) and tempered hardboard on top. 13'6' x 27".

Looks real nice. My only thought is the drawer handles. If it was me I'd be bumping into those all the time. I mean they are very nice handles, no doubt. I'm kinda of a lean on the bench guy myself. How about some recessed handles like on these cabinets.

Thanks DFA, I like that idea. However, I probably won't do anything 'til I actually impale myself on the existing ones. Those would also give it a much cleaner look. Got me thinkin':)

If your drawers have a face attached to a box like most cabinets. Pull the fronts off and replace them with 14 gauge sheet metal and bend in two 90's for a full length drawer pull. Kinda like an inverted J. I've seen cabinets with a finger hole for a pull. Just thinking out loud.

Here mine. Last winter's project. Needed better organization, which meant drawers! Frame is 2x3's, corner post are 2x4 because they needed to be double notched. I do have drawer pulls on it now!
