Just built my first bench for my first garage over the weekend. I'm really happy with how it came out. I'm finishing the surface with Tung oil and mineral spirits, so that's why there is nothing on it yet. I've got a vintage Wilton vice I just picked up off ebay for the front left corner.

I'm going to start a journal thread soon, and I'll have build pics there. It's just a modified 2x4Basics kit, 2.5'x6'

First glance I thought it was a desk. Very nice.

The legs and such were $60 on amazon IIRC, including the shelf stands (actually enough for two, but I chose to do one tall one). Then just the cost of 2x4s and whatever surface material you choose. I probably overspent on the 3/4" Oak hardwood ply, but it's a nice sturdy surface and should look good after the oil sets in. That's also only 2 sheets of the ply, cut smart, with some nice remnants for other projects.

Matt, where are pictures of the STi? And nice bench.

Nice  I'm seeing more and more are using those kits to build a bench. Yours turned out great.

Scooped up some bowling alley lanes from an alley in Castro Valley, Ca. Perfect workbench top and much cheaper than butcher block. It came with the waxy yellow buildup intact, a nice thick coat that pealed off with a little help from a putty knife.
Plenty more were that came from if your in the San Francisco Bay area. The guys got 40 alleys to strip out and he's into it a couple of alleys all ready. Check out his Craigslist ad.

salvaged a heavy wood table / storage device from the dumpster.

it's 8 ft long, was approx 40" deep, i had to cut it back a little, so my s-10 blazer would fit in the garage.

Wow, wish I had found this site before I built a wooden workbench! Some of the metal ones (Steevo's for example) are absolutely amazing. Here is what I have: I built the bench, then put the pegboard up and built the cabinets beside.

I also built a rolling work surface that fits underneath the workbench. For the workbench surface, I used 2x6's, with 3/4" MDF in the middle and 3/4" Maple on top, finished with polyurethane clearcoat. This thing is solid and I love the size of it.

Here's mine. I just finished this in the new shop. Based around Norm's shop hutch from the New Yankee Workshop. It's not perfect, but it was my first time building cabinets and drawers.

I used masonite hardboard for the top, w/ poplar trim around the edges. The hardboard is loose so it can be replaced as it's get dinged up. The drawers on the right side I bought from a university surplus sale, and I built the cabinet to fit them perfectly. Lots of storage, it's really made a difference in my shop!

I wanna get you alls opinion. I have a Craftsman work bench ,steel top and red drawer units under it,there not deep, wore out tracks and alot cheaper made than the Homak box's.. I'm wanting to get 2 36w inch Blue Homak bottom box's and bolt them together, and then bolt the steel top on to them,Space it up so the top drawer will open,Also thinking about taking the wheels off as I want ever move it,The one I have now is bolted to the wall and is real sturdy.

Taking the wheels off,-6 inch and add 2 inch to the top,=38 inch's high.

Bottom box

My gun bench above is the same way I took 2 top box's for 200.00 each and took the tops off bolted them together and then bolt it to the top, also screwed it to the wall, and is sturdy.

The bottom box's are 599 each not on sale, they have 20% off coupons and free shipping to the store,

The only thing is the bottom drawer is not as deep as the Craftsman, but I don't really put anything in them except wire stuff and hoses,

WIDTH DEPTH HEIGHT PC WT 72 1/2 wide bolted together
36 1/8" 22 7/8" 42 1/4" 256 lbs.

this is my parents garage, but I use it exclusively to work on cars and bikes, this is a photo I was taking of my bike but you can see it over there under all the stuff...

I literally can't wait to get my own garage, using this place as an inspiration to build the ultimate. I have started building a collection of tools and stuff at my parents place but the thought of not having to share it with their gardening gear and an infinite amount of junk from the house is very appealing...a tiled heated floor, a TV in the corner, a painted border! I literally dream of the day.

wee bit tidier:

wee bit messier, featuring me:

My mobile work bench (a torsion top table) is in process..started on it this weekend. Here's a time lapse video (future iterations will have the camera a little closer to the work for better detail). I was planning to clean the garage this weekend but had these materials eating up space so I decided to start building the table instead.

In the Can-Am garage I have 2 benches. The first is in the "office" and now sports a nice Jegs mat thanks to suggestions from folks on the board here:

The other is the folding bench that has never been folded! It now has a garage sale / Kijiji vise on it.

Some day I will come across some "real" vises and make the swap. These work for now.

At home, I have a former reloading bench built for me by my Dad's friend.

Yes, yes.....it is in quite a state. I don't do too much there these days.

I also have my Dad's workbench which was a former dining room buffet. My sister still has the table and chairs at her place for arts/crafts. This has some history, has seen a drill bit or 2 and some paint splatter.

Looking for a metal top desk to do cylinder head/transmission/general automotive work on. I am thinking about stainless steel. What gage metal would be appropriate for this? Or would steel be preferred. The only nice thing about stainless is that steel rusts and if you paint it solvents tend to destroy paint.

Mine are a cobble job but worked well enough I havn't done anything about them. They are sized and placed right. They get a few changes once in a while and a couple new boogers welded on.

I started out with an Armstrong Medical cart. Took the wheels off and made it into a bench for my small one car. It was great to get the extra storage and it only ran me $50. I am trying really hard to keep it clean. So far I love having everything I need at arms reach. I am thinking that I am going to paint the vise blue since I seem to be trending towards an all blue set up.

Whats mounted under your bench? Looks like a car deck.

It is just a small Panasonic bookshelf stereo that would take up way too much real estate on top of the bench. So I mounted it under and far enough back that my knees don't hit it.

Is there two tops or is it sitting upside down?

the butchers block is the top (the one piece wood with the plastic wrapping still on it). The bottom is there because I will be dropping in my compressor inside that thing and roll it around. The idea is for it to be a service workbench when I need it and stationary when i dont. :)

Now there is a garage! Everything well used and nicely patina-d, lots of sturdy stuff and good design. I will take a garage like yours that I wouldn't be afraid to get dirty over any fancy paint dealer showroom wannabe garage any day

very nice work space, is that a swinging light in the second photo? That's a great idea.
