I think you may be on to something!

It's a little over 11" long, and it opens to 2 1/2".

Sounds like a couple good ideas so far, I'll have to look them up tomorrow to see how there used. (other than the, "medevil gynocologist device"!)

It's unlikely a puller or separator of any sort--they wouldn't need a locking bar. I agree with some kind of spring compressor, but I don't know nuttin' 'bout dem old engines.

It's an early valve lifter for teen's/20's typical L-heads.
That looks like cast and pretty crude an' bulky. Luckily ,most anything would work on those motors.
