A little story here: Been a member for a while, never posted much, so here goes with my first new thread.

My wife's granddad died back in May. He was a carpenter all his life, but for the last few years couldn't do much due to health problems (strokes, ministrokes, pneumonia, etc.) His son, my father-in-law, followed in his dad's footsteps and became a carpenter. The granddad had a whole bunch of older carpenter tools, some of which my FIL acquired. However, the tablesaw is one that wasn't given to him. Now, his family wants to buy the tablesaw from Granddad's widow and present it to him at Christmas. Don't know much about it, but I sneaked a few pics with my cell the other day. Any thoughts?

Seems like a easy way to make a family member happy.

Not much value on the open market.

Sounds more like family politics than pricing. I'm guessing widow isn't FILs mother, any reason the table saw wasn't given to him.

Does the FIL want or have any special attachment to the saw, maybe the reason he doesn't have it is that it isn't the saw he wants?

I paid $20 for one that was a slightly newer model, but not as in good shape (needed some cleaning up, but completely operable) as the one you have. I've seen them on CL around here for about $40-50 otherwise.

I have that one or very similar
they are a good say and not too hard to repair or refurbish

with that said they are not worth much because new ones are not that expensive and the high end ones people want are the cabinet saws

the fence is junk, put a beismier on it

I picked up a similar one, mid fifties vintage because my Dad's Craftsman was the saw I grew up with. Dad's gone, but Mom still has the saw. I paid $25 for it with the Craftsman rollaround stand, two table extensions, dado set, and several blades (mostly useless). The problem you can have with these old saws is that some of the moving parts (tilt and elevation mechanism especially) are die cast, rather than cast iron or steel on better saws. They wear out and parts are not available except from donor saws. Arbors are a problem too. To make mine usable I had to cut a new keyway, not easy without a mill. Bottom line is that used and maintained carefully they can give you decades of good light-medium duty service. But, look over carefully before buying.

OTOH, how much is peace in the family worth? Might be better in the long run to pay the asking price, whaterver it is.

It has a lot to do with family politics. Before the granddad died, he gave my FIL a metal bending brake that his sister later tried selling out from under him. Granddad told them it's his son's, so that stopped that deal. I'm worried the sister will try to sell this, too. And their mother somewhat allows her daughter to run things...but that's a whole 'nother thread for a whole 'nother forum devoted to families needing massive therapy...lol.

If it's for Christmas for your FIL and family politics play into it, tell her it's worth $25 but to be fair, you'll give her way more than it's worth and offer her $100. If she balks at that, tell her to KYA and go try and sell it to someone else for that amount of money. Personally, I'd pay 5x's the amount to someone else than to have to deal with a family member in the first place. I'll chime in on that when you get the dysfunctional family thread started. Lol!!!

First, that is a nice saw. Well made.

Second, at auctions, they don't bring much, often $10 or less but that is for a machine that you know nothing about. Truly the $25 to $50 range is all they will get for it selling it on CL if they get any response at all.

You know the family dynamics, and I would ask what they want for it. If they say $100 or less, I'd jump on it for your Dad, but if they want more, just say thanks but you can't pay that much. Try to be polite and walk away if needed instead of making the situation worse.

More accessories the better, I see at least one table extension and what appears to be a Craftsman stand, also what appears to be a dado blade insert. The motor makes a difference on value, a proper vintage Craftsman motor makes a difference.
