Hello from western Canada. It is windy cold and snowy today. It is -25 C outside. We actually had a mild winter this year but it is banging heads with spring right now. I am really glad I stumbled on you guys.

I really hope someone can help me with my wheel balancer. I have a Blue Viper tire changer and wheel balancer. I have some questions about the Blue Viper DST WB100 wheel balancer. I have owned it for about a year. It is a medium cost Chinese machine and it works quite good so far. I need some help on a couple of issues. Sometimes when I balance a plain steel wheel I get OPT on the control panel, middle leds. The left and right leds show high numbers. What does that mean? And during my search to find out what OPT meant I came across a wheel balance word - OPTIMISATION. OPTIMISATION is performed on a wheel badly out of balance. How do I perform and what is the procedure to perform an OPTIMISATION wheel balance on my Blue Viper DST WB100? I have attached some pics below.

I don't know for sure but I wonder if they want you to break the bead on the tire and move the tire to a different spot on the wheel and then rebalance.

WB100 is a standard chinese machine sold under several brand names.

I looked up OPT in my manual. Here's what it says:

6.4.4 UNBALANCE OPTIMIZATION (OPT) This function is used to determine the best mating of tire and rim that will result in the least amount of total unbalance of the wheel. It severs to reduce the amount of weight to be added in order to balance the wheel. It is suitable for static unbalance exceeding 30g. A high unbalance may indicate the improper mounting of the wheel on the balancer. If the unbalance is excessive, it may be prudent to replace the rim, the tire, o both. If either is replaced, do not continue with optimization. Balance the new tire and rim and evaluate the readings. After performing the static balance, press . If the unbalance amount shown on the digital readouts is exceeding 30g, the digital readouts display “YES” “OPT”. In this case, start OPT function: x Mark with chalk reference points on the same position of both the tire and the rim. x Rotate the wheel to move the marked points to 12 o’clock position. x Press to memorize the position. x Remove the wheel from the balancer. x Remove the tire from the rim with the aid of a tire changer. x Only mount the rim on the balancer. x Rotate the rim to move the mark to 12 o’clock position. x Spin the rim by hand. After performing the spin: x Rotate the rim until LED indicator for outside lights up. x Mark with chalk on the rim at 12 o’clock position. x With the aid of the tire changer, refit the wheel with the reference marks coinciding between the rim and tire.

I can help you with this. I have the same balancer.

If the machine asks for more than 1oz of weight inside or outside it will give you the option to use the optimize function.
This goes for whichever setup you have selected. Aluminum stickies. Steel weights whatever.

ex.
The machine is set up for an 18" aluminum wheel..... sticky weight style.... on 2 planes (inside and outside)... you have set this with the automatic pull out measuring stick thingy.. you have confirmed the rim size... you spin.. it gives you 2.50 oz inside / 3.5 oz outside. You have the option to ignore the optimize function and continue adding sticky weights on the 2 selected planes of the rim until you are down to zero. (this could take up to 3 spins and 3 weight add ons in 3 different locations.

Now, if you dont want to go broke using up all your sticky weights for some meat heads f150 you can do this. Do not add any weight after the initial balance spin.

The screen will say opt. push the opt button. cycle the arm (fender thing) that starts the machine. the machine spins and now says... 2.25oz. rotate the wheel until the lights blink blink blink (no audible beep on this step).. take 2.25oz and place it at 12 oclock in the center of the rim.

Now spin the wheel again. If it says zero you are done. if it says .75oz rotate the wheel until the machine goes blink blink blink beep beep beep. place the weight at the 12 oclock position in the center of the rim.

this can be used for motorcycle rims, steel rims whatever. If the machine asks for more than 1oz inside or outside it will give you the option to select optimize. You don't have to select optimize. optimize only balances the wheel on one central plane. calculated at the midpoint between the two orinigally input weight locations. It will not be as accurate as a two plane balance but it saves lots on weights and sometimes its just a better option for some of these big wheels or small wheels just the same.

Thanks so much for the reply. I am having a difficult time finding someone with my kind of balancer. Sorry I didn't see it earlier. If you don't mind I need your help with alloy (ALU) balancing and the OPT alert on steel wheels (14, 15 and 17 inch). Apparently there is a optimisation balance a guy can do also when wheels go over the standard value of weights. I am familiar and ok with standard balancing. But that doesn't cut it when the OPT alert comes up or someone wants alloy wheels balanced or 17/18 inch wheels that have winter tires and are off balance and I should know how to execute an optimisation balance. The example you gave was good but went over my head so I need to discuss it wih you. I don't mind compensating you for your valuable time so we will probably have to use email or text to communicate. Can you help me learn the tricks with the balancer?
