I was thinking about how you make one of these:

The part I was mainly thinking on was the C channel. I was wondering if you made it out of an I-beam could you mount two I-beam trollies, one on each side of the I-beam and have them support the weight as you lifted vertically? I figured if you bolted the two trollies together in two places it would limit the "twist" or uneven pressure on the trolley wheels.

The other thing I couldn't find is a reasonably priced long throw cylinder ram. I'm still thinking on how to do the lift. One idea was this:

The other idea was a winch mounted to the top of the post.

I know, once the design is done the cost will be so high that purchase will be cheaper. This is really more of a "how would you do this safely" dream.

I know there were some members on here who built a vertical lift to store things, but I cannot find the threads.

Anyway, I want 47" of lift when done.

How would you design it to have a vertical left? I-bean, square pipe, round pipe?
