I built this planter on wheels for our small backyard. The idea is to keep it in the sun but be able to tuck it away if we want to play out there. I originally designed the "floor" boards with no gaps because I read somewhere online that this style of planter takes more water. My FIL and my mom (both gardeners) recommended drainage gaps. I'm worried dirt will run out. Thoughts? Gravel in the bottom? Some type of mesh or cloth?

Standard weed cloth will prevent dirt from exiting. I tend to use 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 vermiculite per the Square Foot Gardening techniques for raised beds and have great luck.

2nd weed cloth, window screen may work as well. Since its already built just drill some 3/8th or 1/2 holes for drainage and you will be good.

It will drain but will bring silt from the soil. I would use containers in that. Easier to clean up after the season.
