Wheeled seat/stool

What's everyone using for a wheeled seat or stool to sit on when detailing or working on the bottom areas of you cars? I've got a cheap craftsman seat but am looking for something more comfortable with a back on it. I'm looking at this one but it's pricey. https://www.classicindustries.com/product/14660.html

I've had it for over two years and it has held up amazingly well. I haven't felt the need to upgrade to something with a back...yet.

Beats the heck out of the milk crate I used to use.

I have the mechanic's seat from Snap-on and it works great for me and has stoop up well. I'm sure there are other brands of the same style out there.

i've heard those are 50/50 on the piston you either get one that will last or one that fails within the first couple months

i got the basic HF seat... i definitely exceed the 250lb rating but it hasn't fallen apart so far and if it does i got it for free so no big deal

I have this one. It's fine. I had the sinlge post one before, and it is more prone to tip. The snap-on one is a re-badged williams, which is the same as everyone elses from 10 years back. The matco one I had, (which looked the same as the SO and williams one) the wheels literally disintegrated. I have some larger casters I plan to put on that one.

I have had a Craftsman exactly like this one for many years. It has held up very well. It amazes me that those cantilevered arms are able to support the ever increasing load I subject it to as the years go by.

This is what I am talking about. The matco had those red rimmed wheels. The red part got dried out, hard and brittle, and eventually broke apart making it useless.

fifty bucks shipped from Walmart.
add Casters, a 7/8 ratchet wrench, a couple of hf magnet strips, a yard sale gel cushion.
Lowers to 3.5 inches

Any 5 buck yard sale desk chair back will mount to it, or mount the whole chair if you like.
A 30 dollar jd seat will also mount.

I've got a few, the cheapo ones both pneumatic and open frame, they both ****.

What I use is a nice Steelcase office chair with the back removed. nice big comfy seat and higher quality pneumatics. it came from work but you can get them at yard sales for pretty cheap. much more stabile than most of the small dedicated seats you can buy I've found...

I have the old Harbor folding one. It folds flat and is easy to store I like it because it can go in a drawer, on top of the box or hangs flat on the side of the box. I've had it for at least 8 years and used to use it Daily in the shop but took a promotion 3 years ago. unfortunately they no longer sell it.

Even though I have one of these seats, I find it too high when doing brake or suspension work. I usually find myself sitting cross legged on the ground and use the seat shelf for a tool caddy and the seat to push myself upright after my legs fall asleep.

Yeah, that's something to consider. My knees are getting to the point where a jack would be helpful getting up off the ground. Maybe a motorized jack with a 3' lift capacity.

I did voice/data installs for 30 years, thousands of connector terminations and faceplates mounted low on the wall. It never occurred to me to use one of these seats. Come to think of it, I never saw any electricians on jobs using them either.

A power window motor will duct tape right to that drive head on the one in my link....

OR a chinese socket... who works on their car and doesn't have an impact close by.

I might have to make this thing. I have some awesome german-bearing casters.

+1 on the whiteside stool, got mine from amazon a few months back on sale for 100.00 delivered! Its held up great with daily use so far

So, my question, how stable are they? I have a couple of the old style with the rectangular seat, and I find them to be a little tipsy, for lack of a better word. I'm 6' 2" and 240 pounds, so maybe i'm expecting too much, but I want a stool that doesn't tip over every time you try to roll

I think the size of the wheels have a lot to do with it. These tiny wheels they put on these are not great.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE mine. (it was a gift. This and a Mr hanky doll. A gift of two stools)
It lives in a corner until I can give it away

It boils down to
It takes a pretty picture, but the drawers are awkward to use.

I got one of these (WEN branded before HF made them but its the same thing) thinking the organization would be nice. I move tools from my main box to this one as I phase in better tools.

I'm a bit of a organization freak and these drawers are too shallow and to short. I've figured out some ways to work with it but not everything.
I gave up trying to fit a wrench organizer, cut up 3 trying to fit everything and its just not going to work. Got lucky that a kobalt socket set mostly fit. I keep it in there due to the high density of the blow mold case (that also fits).
Wrenches are now just tossed in and same with pliers.

The seat is soft and rolls around well. Having some tools near by when I'm under something can come in handy but the design is not idea.
The flappy trays are rarely used and the rack in the back should just be cut off unless you like tools flying out on the ground as you scoot around.
Also the drawers dont stay closed well.

It's a creeper with a tractor seat bolted to it. I made it this morning after someone posted that picture.
I used these (whatever they're called) bolts so the seat comes off easily.

20 minutes and done.
I'll never use it

The whiteside model has a wide base that makes it stay put on your average mostly level floor,even if you are sitting on the edge of the seat reaching for something.
FWIW they have a 580LB weight capacity listed for them.
I mostly use mine working raised beds in a greenhouse.

I have this Traxion 2-700 ProGear Mobile Gear Seat. I got it because it has the lowest minimum seat height I could find. I hadn't seen the Whiteside model mentioned above obviously. Its been in daily use for a couple years with no signs of wear. Its very comfortable, has huge wheels to roll over little obstacles, and the tray underneath is very handy.

I'm with you. It is the same one others are selling for more money. At HF it is one of those items that always seems to be on sale. For under 20 bucks you can't go wrong. Never missed the back and it could be a little better padded but I am usually too focused on what I am doing to worry about that.
