I am currently designing a pitbox for racing. it will be a frame built around a tool box with storage on either side. think of the famous snap on taco wagon.
the problem i am having right now is finding wheels for it. I know what I want (free spinning wheels on bearings with inflatable tire, about 8'' in diameter) but i can't think of a place to get said wheels.
doe anybody know of an application that uses similar wheels so that i can source them?
this is what i am shooting for

Go kart racing wheels and tires? I know the local dirt guys around here just about give them away after a few races.

Do you have agricultural supply stores where you're located in Canada? Anybody that sells farming equipment (tractors, etc) ought to be able to easily source what you're looking for.

In the states, even Tractor Supply or Northern Industrial has a decent selection.

that is a nice idea perhaps McMaster Carr would have what it takes

Golf cart, new or used

If you can find a junker golf car you will also have the steering off it

yeah i'll second TSC, i was up in there yesterday with my girl while she was picking up some equestrian supplies and i noticed they had a pretty respectable selection of casters and wheels, across a pretty wide range of sizes. lots of welding stuff, too. interesting place; first time i had ever been to one.

The golf cart is a real good idea.

Something like this would do it a lot cheaper than any other way.

No casters you can buy from a store will hold up for what you're trying to do. They're junk. Good casters are expensive and with decent load ratings they don't come in pneumatic. If you're staying on smooth surfaces balloon casters or the like from Colson, Magliner or another good brand will work. They're not cheap tho. We buy $60 "800lb. capacity" hand trucks at work. A month later when the wheels fall apart from running 200 pounds around on them we put $80 worth of wheels on them and they last forever.

try northern tool, like ears said casters will not hold up, we built a pitbox with them and they ended up breaking off after a while. try to find something like small trailer tires or golf cart tires that would be the best option.

Personally, I'm a fan of foam filled forklift steer tires and hubs.

However, small high pressure trailer tires and spindles are readily available from any decent trailer supply company for next to nothing.

If you are going to buy a Golf cart for the wheels why not modify it to hold the box. On a side note how complicated is your racecar that you need as much box as a taco wagon?

It is a Formula SAE. The issue with that is that we are not authorized to have motorized vehicles in the pits. The cars are very fragile and you know how "accident" tend to happen...
We will pretty much live out of that box. It needs to hold all the tools, driver suits and helmets even the tires will be somehow attached

If you are storing your suits in the box and you wnat a SO box. I would take a look at the Kr7100. It is kind of tall but that is just because of the design. A drop frame and wagon setup would be cool. YOu would have to make sure you can fit it in your trailer. You can also put your helmets in the hutch.

I'm planning on building a pit box too. I've been looking at the solid rubber tires used on electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters. You can get these new all over the place, up to about 8" x 2" (200mm x75mm).

I am not OK with inflatable, but if you are, I would also look at two-wheel-dollie tires. They have pretty heavy ratings.

If I was going with inflatable, I'd actually go a bit larger and put automobile donut spare tires on the pit cart. To me, that would be the ultimate in reliability for an inflatable tire.

I plan on building a frame around an existing toolbox and have side lockers on either side. I may add a hutch later on.
A snap on product is definitely out of the question as it is too expensive. We cannot blow that big a hole in our budget for just the pit box... We still need to build a car too ;)

I am leaning toward APmech's idea of foam filled tires at this point

I started building one, have the 8in tires from Grizzly as above. My goal was to add weight to the back of the trailer and after realizing how heavy the thing would be when filled up, was planning on putting a honda generator and small compressor in the bottom.
Then decide to build a Tire Cart instead, used another set of 8in casters from Amazon.

That is nicely done. Not a bad idea but the general concensus with the team is that an all-in-one unit that could double as a work surface would be pretty awesome

Built one in college. HF wheels similar to the ones shown. 2 nitrogen bottles at the bottom, 42" box, and 3/8 in top. It was a beast. Eventually we but the top box on. For us storage was more useful then a work surface. It was a beast and served us well.
