25k for the foam per box sounds like a lot.

That's the box itself, the reader system and it's software, as well as doing the foam inserts and the basic programming for the Snap On system. Ours is run on a mainframe system, the boxes are networked to the mainframe and we have probably a thousand boxes and cabinets.

As people have said - aviation can be a big user. Some aviation cultures require total tool control, others do not.

I retired from running a flight facility for a major aerospace firm under government contract. With tool control being a requirement and having people who's entire job was inspecting tool boxes 'on' and 'off' aircraft - along with every other piece of gear - I can see where even at the cost a system like this would pay for itself in a pretty short time.

The calibration angle - I would think most places buying this would already have a pretty much bullet proof calibration automated system in place. At least we did.

Biggest tool thing I miss being retired is not being able to buy the Snap On stuff at GSA prices any more. As contractors we could do that for personal use. When it's priced at about the Craftsman level it was easier to justify the good stuff!

Not SO brand, though filled with SO tools (irony)... but we have a FEW of those helping to control tools during BlackHawk assembly.

Put it this way... I've heard upwards of $1.5 mil has been spent on this type and RFID tool control.
