When to apply epoxy

It is my intention to start construction on my garage in about 2 weeks. I really want to use an epoxy product on my floor to protect it.

I was wondering if I should have the concrete poured, and then put the epoxy over the entire slab, or should I wait until all the construction is done and then put the epoxy down?

Well you need to wait a month for the concrete to cure before doing any type of sealing or coating. I’d build the building and once finished do the cleaning and prep then coat the floor.

Same here. You want to be able to keep the bugs out, and it will save a bunch of abuse.

Epoxy is a good choice. I did the same and put down epoxy and it has been almost 10 years since I put it down. It has lasted very well in a working garage where I have pulled engines, transmissions, and many other garage-type things over the years.

After 5-6 years it began to lift in one small section where one car that is driven daily parks (small, maybe 10" square area). Warm tires probably caused it. Aside from that the only issue is the yellowing from UV. Epoxy isn't very UV stable, so it will yellow over time if you have doors open or windows that shine in to the floor.

It really has been a very good floor...but...building a new bigger garage now and this time I am going to avoid those two issues I had with epoxy (lifting and yellowing) and put down porcelain tile. If you are doing it yourself, they are about the same price/sf if you don't go crazy on the tile.

I don't regret using the epoxy, it was a fantastic floor...but I think I can do better this time.

Just an alternative to consider...

Wether it’s from bad prep or moisture content, seems to be lots of folks that have issues with epoxy and it’s not inexpensive.

Always do the floor last so the other trades don’t beat it up.
