when to upgrade your box?

i currently have a HF 44" roll cab that i have had no complaints about except it filled up much faster than i thought it would for a guy who thought he didn't have too many tools. i still have a little space in the box but not much and just inherited about another half box worth of tools(win!). i am in the debate of what to do for storage

A. just get the top box and fill it, i will still have a full box

b. get a cart and use it for my main use items and the new old stuff into the cab. both boxes would be full or near full

or c. just upgrade to a larger roll cab and sell the HF to help offset the cost. i'm leaning toward this option as it will give me more upgrade options as my collection continues to grow

what would you guys do

Depends on the situation. Im assuming your a home user. If you don't plan on getting a whole lot more just buy the top box. If you plan on buying alot more stuff. Ditch your current set up and buy a wider taller deeper chest. Beleive it or not a 10in deeper box adds a ton of space.

The good thing about top brand boxes snap-on, mac, matco ect, a lot of there boxes you can buy add ons like a hutch, cabinets, side lockers ect. The only problem is be prepared to spend a lot of money on those the triple bays go for 8000 and up. My boss has about 25000 thousand invested just in his box, and another 100000+ worth of tools. If it was me and its just a hobby or if you don't plan on opening a shop I would buy one of those extreme toolboxes or something like that. There good boxes for the price, and you can buy upgrades for them hutches, side lockers ect.

How much space and money do you have budgeted for this project? If you have the space a industrial cabinet such as a lista is going to be the most storage for the floor space. Behind that would be a 20"+ deep 36"+ wide bottom box. Side boxes aren't very practical for the home guy and are hardly cost efficient when it comes to storage space. They will however fit in a tight spot, but by the time you put a side box on you would be better going with a larger main box.

As for the get a top vs another roll cab. Depends on what you value more, work bench space (get another bottom) or floor space (get a top box).

Depends on your budget. I'd love to have a big KRL (1023/1032/1033) but have the budget for an HF44. If I was in you situation, I'd probably be looking at an HF56 or 72.

Buy a hf 56", and sell the 44".
Get the top, to the box.
Get a roll cart.
Peg board above the box.

That's what I did. I have a lot of tools, and two boxes is perfect for me.

3 sets are the limit in my small garage.

i have an additional 26" top & roller in the basement, plus another top for my machinist tools.

efficient storage & organization goes a long way in a smaller box.

ie: getting rid of plastic trays that (seemingly every) set of tools comes in today, NOT using hansen type socket trays. storing multiple blow molded boxes in drawers (unless you really have room for them)

4 or 5 drawer carts can add some much needed space for a full time wrencher that needs his most used tools at arms reach,
IMO, in a home garage they are a huge waste of available space vs. storage

add a top box, you wont take up available floor area, a side box is a simple add on that really doesnt take up much space, or a locker for those pesky blow molded boxes.

personally, i'm not a fan of double or triple bank boxes, i like to be able to move my "smaller" boxes around to fit my gararge storage needs when i have to.

sadly i dont have the space to go 88" wide

i have lots more to get. recently upgraded to 3/4ton diesel and all the parts are bigger and need bigger tools lol

ive got some floor space to give, but not a ton. i will most likely be moving mid next year and dont know what space ill have unfortunetly. i think a box in the 56'ish width thats deeper would really be my best safe bet.


i'd love to have a top hutch and 2 side lockers eventually but i understand that i gotta work with the space i have
