So are there any must haves I should get while Armstrong stuff is being dumped?

Well, before Apex announced they were killing off Armstrong, seemed like the 60/88t locking flex ratchets were pretty well loved by gj. Now that they're going down the drain, everyone is saying how horrible they are. Maybe the last few off the assembly lines really were terrible, or maybe a lot of ppl here are sheep. I recommend that you try one.

Most of the sheep were the people that bought them.

Lots of people touted 88t on GJ for years, and many people bought based on those threads and later had regrets. And we know that in the 5-6 years of production, Armstrong never fixed the design flaws until AJ manufacturing took over the production for matco.

If people have bought into the ratchets I would first get your hands on some rebuild kits and not really worry about them after that. Def would not tell people to buy into the system with a dead and flawed design. Although it seems they can be fixed with small changes.

Over the tool's lifetime it also doesn't save significant money over snap-on or something like Facom/Usag italy ratchets.

My thinking is, for hand tools like ratchets, sockets, wrenches-You'll get a Gearwrench replacement for Armstrong.

Soooo... Chinese cheap in exchange for made in USA decent. Cool, huh?

Everything Armstrong gets a cheap gearwrench replacement for warranty now. Also fastenal....will not warrany out sockets. They say armstrong sockets carry a one year warranty....even though socket set box says otherwise. Im not buying anything apex anymore. My 1/2" armstrong maxx locking flex came back as a crappy gearwrench. Not the same quality. spread the ears already, armstrong just needed a rebuild kit...it never loosened up like this. Also armstrong breaker bar came back as gearwrench 24". Those are my two warranty claims. Tooltopia or the trucks for me. HJE is super also. Before someone asks....i have no clue why i didnt just get a rebuild kit...fastenal said they had to send the whole ratchet in. dumb.

I will say this, I bought a 1/4 60t locking flex based off of the positive reviews I found here, before the 88t was available in Armstrong rats. I use it quite a bit and it has never given me problems, and it's one of my favorites in 1/4, although in true gj form I like to have a variety of rats for different jobs, and am not a pro. I also have a 3/8 in 88t I picked up last year that is still unused, but I'm probably just going to toss it in a drawer.

I have six armstrong ratchets, 3 locking flex and and 3 regular maxx ratchets. I have had no problems with any of them. The only negative thing I can say about them is the 3/8 flex had some flaws in the finish, but I got over that quickly. I think 5 of the 6 are 88t.
