Been getting all the metal cut for this book shelf my wife wants me to make. More of a magazine holder. :scared: I got all the metal cut and decided to go ahead and put the first shelf together to see how it would look. That's when I realized this thing is way over built. Actually I think I will be be able to drive my truck over it. Do I keep going or just use this one as the bottom shelve and build the other shelves with cross pieces?

Book shelf? Is the wife into automotive manuals or what??

I have never ever under built a thing in my life. Coming from a house that wouldn't let you build anything. I seem to find myself making something all the time. I have like 20 years worth of magazines and my wife is tired of seeing them in the corner stacked up because the book shelf now is totally full. I also need to have room for her books, my reloading manuals, and a lot of it yourself books I have gotten over the years from Lowes. So how far did I over do it?

You should see the first big trailer I built. I had no idea about copying really and self designed it with about 3x as much steel as needed. 35 years later I can come real close to the pencil pushers.

In my mind, unless your application requires a balance weight and strength (race cars, airplanes, etc.), then don't worry about overbuilding something. If you already have all the metal purchased and cut, I would proceed as originally planned. Who cares if its overbuilt? At least you know you won't have to ever worry about overloading it.

Many years ago my ex and I were staying with my parents while I built out new house, my
father was transferred so the house went up for sale. My mother did not want the cats
kept in the house in case of odor or allergies so I built a cat shelter/cage that was 4 by 8
on 4 by 4 legs with expanded metal sides etc. The thing was so heavy it actually sunk thru
the tar. The buyers actually liked it so much they put in their offer that it had to stay with the house!

Some books are really heavy. Those shelves shouldn't sag...

(If you keep going, I would assemble it in place...)

Reminds me of the sound equipment cart I helped assemble. It was partially assembled when I started helping with it. I didn't know we were going to have to take the door frame apart to get it out the door. It took three of us to get it in the back of the truck. If we'd had more time, I said we could have put a tongue and axle on it, registered it and moved it that way. It was mad from 2x4s and 3/4" plywood on the outside and 3/4" plywood as a floor on the inside. The removable lid was 3/4 plywood and 2x4s, too...

I guess years ago, my dad was asked if he would be working on coal trucks when he built the front porch...

Don't underestimate the weight of books. A lot of bookcases end up sagging. I don't think you'll have that problem.

I would finish it as designed.
