Where and how do you store your engine hoist?

Really, I didn't realize how handy it was, till I was living alone. No extra hands means the hoist gets used.

I've been wanting to design a cherry picker for some time, using 3 or 4 tubes that telescope out of the vertical to be used as outriggers. Along the lines of the Apex keyboard stand

The vertical tube acts as a carring case with a handle.

I'm keeping mine in the shed where I store the lawn tools. It's outta the garage but handy too. I use my dolly (the one with pneumatic tires) to move the hoist around. I keep my 80 gallon 220 VAC compressor (bought at lowes with my mil discount thank you) outside on a concrete pad with a little house around it made from left overs form building the garage. The concrete came out of the pipe that was used to pump the concrete to the building site. Pretty cool I think!

Mine's at my brothers house and he re-paid the favor by storing his Fat Boy at my house. Once I get a garden shed up it will be stored there.

I can picture some kind of electric hoist lift to the ceiling like the elevator or trailer lifts seen elsewhere here.

Or maybe if you have a 2 post lift, a hoist mounted on top of post that lifts the engine hoist up sliding on some kind of sled with roller blade wheels that keeps it hugging the post. Idk just kind thinking in print right now.

I fought a Cherry picker for many many years. It was stored every where from in my shop, to out side, to in the shed. I just got tired of putting it together all the time. After peaking my mid thirties, I don't know if I got lazy or smarter. But I sold it for $125 and threw in a few more bucks and bought an electric hoist from HF with a 20% coupon. Best shop investment I made in years. It's ONLY draw back is, I can't take it outside. It has a 880lb lift cap. and I have lifted a verified 450 with it and it didn't bog down at all. I just happen to have a 4"x12" solid beam running across my shop. I attached it on to a piece of uni-strut with 5 1/2"x4" lag bolts. I have had no issues to date after lifting over 100 riding mowers. I regularly check my tattle tale washers for looseness when under a load.

When lifting a motor out of a car using that electric hoist, do you roll the car back to get the motor clear of the car? I have a beam in the garage I have thought of hanging a chain fall from, but unclear on the mechanics of rolling the car out of the way.

Yes that is the only way to do it. I've done a V6 engine with it and a 125hp Merc. Outboard. Rolled both the truck and boat out from under the motors. IMO. the hoist is 150% safer than a cherry picker. I've dumped more than one V8 on it's oil pan with a picker.

The thing that is a killer for me is in reality I need to always have one handy but the amount I use it varies ! I'm sure one of you scholars can craft up a wall holder with minimal disassembly and re assembly.

I just took some pictures.. Right now my engine lift has on it:
pontiac 3.4 V6 block on a tire
drill press
propane tank
40lbs kitty litter (for spilled oil)
vw took kit
2.5 ford ranger rhyno pak heavy duty flywheel
engine stabilizer
chains
tons of spare bicycle tubes
and probably some more junk I'm forgetting but the space it takes up is used well.

the garage is 24"x24" My space on one side, junk and my brother's car on the other.

I spy a mk2 head with manifold and cam and a mk3 gti
