I have a entire rack of Matco security tamper torx plus sockets and I have never used a single one. I got them on a deal with something else used I bought one time.
These are not the normal security torx.....these are the torx plus ones which have 5 lobes on them. Wondering if I should just sell this rack or keep it. Maybe I couldn't even sell it that easy if they aren't used that often

If you plan on wrenching on stuff for a long time, then I'd keep them.

Torx Plus really just started to appear on new cars around 2007/2008ish, and Tamper Proof Torx Plus only few years ago with any regularity.

Ford uses Torx Plus in various situations and I know GM was phasing them in late 2000's into components like seat belt reels and anchors, ABS modules, SRS items and the like just ot kleep folks out.

Torx Plus and Torx Plus Tamper Proof are like the triple squares and bi-hex of Euro and JDM cars.

You don;t need them regularly, but when you do, you do.

Thus my first point. Sell off if not used on your cars or anyone else's you may work and if they do, just take them in to a local shop witht he right tools to be repaired like most drivers
:)

Lots of electronic devices use smaller tamper resistant torx fasteners to keep people from trying to fix stuff themselves.

Primary use is fixtures in public areas. Bathrooms/playgrounds/parks/etc...

ATT telephone boxes that they mount on houses use them too to keep the customer out of the utilities side of the box.

I think some people are confusing these with security torx which they are totally different from.
Bathroom stalls and all that use regular security torx.
Look closely these have five lobes that are rounded.
Regular security torx have 6 lobes and are more pointed

I have them on a lot of my fixtures in the laundromats, ie...paper towel dispenser and toilet paper dispenser, the partitions for the toilet stalls, and on my vending machines. Most of the coin mechs on the machines have them as well.

I don't see them on the older cars, but like some folks mentioned the newer stuff has them. That matco set is a nice set so I wouldn't get rid of them. Just put them away and when you need them you will be glad you have a good set.

As mentioned in the title and at least twice since, are you sure you are talking about Torx Plus Security? They are very different from Torx Security which is just a pin in a normal six point torx fitting. Torx Plus is a six point fitting also but Torx Plus Security is a 5 point fitting.

my stepdad was a carpenter and was part of building Jackson prison in Jackson Michigan..

I have a few of his old security bits like these...

and ive been to the county pound a couple of times..

fasteners like these are all over jails and prisons...

ive never noticed the "plus" ones but I see many many torx security around..

my Yamaha carbs... and I replaced them with 8mm bolts instead of torx security..

On my 2005 2 stroke outboard motor (Johnson), the carbs have an EPA-mandated tamper resistant torx plus screw on each carb body, and then also on the low speed adjustment screw. What a PITA.

Reminds me of those plastic limiter caps they used to put on ~1973 and later carb idle mixture screws during the bad old days of smog control. The factory would set the idle mixture to "crappy" and then shove one of those limiters on the screw so you couldn't richen it up. A pair of sturdy channelocks would make short work of that plastic cap! Some manufacturers got even smarter and used a recessed D-shaped head on the mixture screw, requiring a special tool for adjustment, some of these went so far as using a tiny Welch plug to cover the screw.

Cheers,
Paul

I'm pretty sure all the bathroom fixtures I seen are security torx. These are a different ball game.
Security torx on the right and security torx plus on the left. Wish I had some torx plus aswell I'd show them

I think we are still a bit screwed up on terminology. It was my understanding that Torx Plus is also a six lobe fitting but slightly larger in size and with rounded lobes instead of points. An example application is the seat belt bolts in Ford Trucks which use a 55TP. It seems like some posters are assuming the plus part of torx plus means 5 lobes.

I have no idea what a 5 point lobe would be called. Torx Plus Security maybe?

What I think is really stupid is why they have the term "plus" for 2 different fastners that have a different number of lobes

Plus does not mean 5 lobes, Plus Security does.

Lots of electronic devices use smaller tamper resistant torx fasteners to keep people from trying to fix stuff themselves.

The only ones I ever encountered were used to hold the 2 halves of my Panasonic battery charger together. I discovered them after the cord got cut and I tried to replace it.

Went and bought the individual one I needed only to find the shaft the screws were buried in was too small to accept any of the bit holders I had. Ended up just drilling out the plastic along with the fasteners and taped the box back together after rewiring it.

I think I threw the bit away....

Been using them for over a decade on injection pumps......Keeps the average idiot from tinkering on something they know nothing about.
Never stopped me! I'm no longer an idiot. You muff up a couple delphi pumps and you learn fast

The ignition control module in my Jeep Liberty CRD is held in with a little tiny security torx fastener.

These are the security torx plus ones?

Haha it seems like everyone keeps chiming in on security torx which is not at all what I'm talking about. I have dealt with those numerous times.....
What I haven't dealt with is the tamper plus ones.....so if anyone has any pictures of anything or things that deal exactly with those and "not" regular security torx that would be great!
I knew this topic was gonna go off course quickly!!

I have only seen them in one place so far. The ignition lock housing bolts on a PT cruiser that hold the housing to the column. I had to borrow them, got the job done and bought a set. Crazy part was the bolts didn't have standard threads either.
I bought a set to make sure I would never do another.
