Where are Service Wrenches used?

Sterff has a set of Wright Service Wrenches in the classifieds and I see them elsewhere from time to time, but I’ve never really seen them in use. The handles seem too short for the sizes.

Are these used for machine tools?

On aircraft I use them on connector jam nuts......sometimes called "B" Nuts.

The female end of connectors are often secured to the structure with a massive nut that is only lightly torqued. If you need to work on the connector for a repair you will need to remove the connector itself to repair the wires. If you were to grab the correct size wrench (1-3/16" is common) for these you would have an enormous wrench in your hand and there's no chance of fitting it where you need. Service wrenches seem to be ideal for this. 12pt crowsfoot work in some spots even better.

Sometimes a socket will fit but you end up having to use adapters to get from 1" drive all the way down to a 3/8" or sometimes even 1/4".

I use Knipex plier wrenches sometimes, but even these are not ideal especially where there are several connectors next to each other.

I have an old Williams service wrench I got at the flea a while ago. I don't think anything feels better than holding that heavy piece of old American iron. I'd imagine they'd be used a lot on heavy equipment due to how beefy they are .

I use them, they are also know as pump wrenches and are used on larger scale pumps at water and sewage treatment plants

Bingo! This is where I used them back when I worked in that industry (that I'm so glad I was able get out of with only having lost my sense of smell).

i use them for oil lines and ****** lines as well as alignments on cars. they are thin and very strong. great for jam nut situations as mentioned before. have cheater piped a few while doing alignments. my common used sizes are 17, 18, 19, 22, 24, 27, 30, 32, 36. Im still trying to fill in all the odd sizes i dont use simply because i dislike not having complete sets :)

We use them to work on installations in close proximity to walls and ceilings, where a full sized wrench may be to long.
We have also been known to take a regular wrench and cut it in half; these specialty sets can be pricey for something not used very often.

We have a couple that we use on a big printing press. We only use them for things that dont require much torque

I use the **** out of them for bigger hyd fitting/hose/ hard lines and the coolant lines on large cnc equipment. Before that as a helicopter mech on bleed air lines. 15-60 wrenches are better for lines under 1-1/4"

Stuffing boxes!

Or.....Any limited access application with a large jam nut as many have mentioned above. I buy the Williams off eBay. They work for me.

About half the old wrenches associated with the old steam trains and the sugar mills here half are SOE.

Steamfitters liked them too.

Lot of times they came with a piece of equipment. I have some 36mm German made service wrenches used for adjusting jam nuts on a Claas baler.

The shorter length makes them easier to fit in the tool box, that is attached to the machine

They are for factory machines old ones especially they are used I industrial settings and I would think the guys smack them with a dead blow from time to time. Also used in machine shops and so on I've seen them a bunch.

Hydraulic fittings

They become striking wrenches when I hit them with the 4lb hammer because the ************ before me (often the factory guy) overtightened the **** out of them
