A shop near where I work, was thowing this floor stand Atlas Drill Press away (3/4hp). I think it is circa 1970

I rewired it, welded the vise, threw on a new belt and a carrage bolt to keep the spline shaft from over extending and now it works like a Champ

But I would like to find a cover for the pully. Any of you guys have any suggestions?

I thought about fabing one together, but...I figured it doesn't hurt to look.

hadn't thought of that one... I do have an old carry around tool box....hmmm ;)

I was thinking about just making a sort of "fender" for the front pully only, bend some sheet metal to that it is shaped like a fender that can be held on by the original flang below the front pully....wrap the "fender" just far enough around to protect your hand at the on/off switch on the right. This would leave most of the pully open, but would protect your face and hands...

How about an old cary around tool box? Cut two round holes for the pullys to slip through.

Toolbox idea sounds good to me, open the lid and have access to the pullies, close the lid and keep the dust out. :rocker: Is that your air compressor in between the wall studs? :)

Here's what the original looked like...The top machine is a 1945 model...the lower pic is a later model, smaller machine...I think yours is the top one (I'm sure of it)...and it will last you 'till you assume room temperature...

I don't have any help on the cover for the belts on the drill press but Krooser, the press on the right. I have that exact one. I inherited from my father. He used to work for MIT's Instrumentation Lab in Boston and one of the engineers needed money and my father took him up on it. The engineer had gone through the head of the press and toleranced the unit and put ball bearings in. When you turn the press on all you hear is the motor. The only thing that wobbles is a bad drill bit. Anyway, the drill press is definately from the mid to late 40's.

Krooser, those pics are really helpfull. I had trouble finding any info or pics about this drill press online, and unknowningly I invisioned making a pully cover that was similar to the original. The only bad thing is that after looking at those pictures I am now going to have to paint mine. LOL

Thx for the info!

BTW...Do you have any pics of the left side of the green drill press. I am missing one part on that side and the cover over the coiled spring is missing. So any more pics would be very appreciated.

Atlas Press Co. is still around, it is a division of Clausing Industries. They may still have some parts for your drill press, maybe even a copy of the manual for it.

Thx for the link, I may drop them an email to see what they say, I could use 2 or 3 more parts that are missing.
