Where can I get my hands on print catalogs?

So the internet is amazing for researching something specific- something I already had in mind. But sometimes I just want to browse through pages and discover things I never knew existed. But downloading and clicking through .pdf's is tedious (especially with my rural Flintstones internet) and just isn't the same as a physical paper copy.

So do you folks know what companies still even offer print catalogs? And how can I get my hands on them? I did a Googler and found OTC had a catalog request form but that was about it.

I guess the best I've got is Grainger and Northern. Id almost kill to get a McMaster-Carr but from what I gather is you've got to be a pretty big player to obtain one of those. I'm just a farmer (and not even the rich kind) so my purchase volume is tantamount to a home gamer- perhaps even less than.

I've got a couple of McMaster Carr catalogs on sale at eBay right now. They're a few years old, but in good shape. They're hands down the best industrial reference out there. $14.99 + free shipping if you're interested in one. If we do it outside of eBay, I could knock off a few more dollars.

Is Steiger a reference to a big articulated farm tractor?

Snap On just rolled out a brand new catalog. You can get one from any dealer. Calling their customer service 800 number may net you one as well.

The tool trucks all have paper catalogs. I have the Snap-on and Mac. Also have Irwin, Lennox and Apex 2013 Industrial Hand Tools

The John Deere and Case IH tool and workshop catalogs are smaller but interesting

If you don't work in a dealership, your mileage might vary on that. I had one driver refuse to take my home-gamer cash, let alone give me a free catalog.

What exactly are looking for? Just mechanic tools?

When I was a factory supervisor we had Grainiger catalogs huge way more stuff than I ever be looking for

I work for a farm business now we have the standard equipment supplier catalogs like Gempler's and A.M .Leonard. For general office/warehouse shipping supplies there is ULINE. There is also Aramak/Wearguard for clothes.

I also get like AutoSource flyers from the auto parts store :) I get catalogs from Summit Tools AND Del City for electric parts.

Of course there is Farmtek and greenhouse grower supply. Harbor Freight and ACME TOOL sends out good ones for trade tools

That standard stuff Like Northern I rarely ever even look at any more, Tractor Supply (pretty much worthless too ;) )

That's a good deal for catalogs you get for free..

However, they are a wealth of information.

You can order the new Snappy Catalog for free on the website. And they'll ship it to you in a monster box via UPS, because sending catalogs USPS without a box is for poor people.

I'm waiting on my catalog from 8020.net...loads of stuff I can do with that, but their website makes it hard to visualize.

I just ordered one from their website. Its like having an old sears wishbook when I was a kid. 700 plus pages of "oohing and ahhing" They charge $5 for the catalog and ship via UPS.

Hrmm....mine shipped free. I wonder if they change the rate based on whether you're a new/established customer.

[EDIT] Just tried again and I am offered free shipping again.

Some years ago I requested and received a MSC catalog for free. I never did order anything from them but it's been a great reference book.

Fierljeppen - Yeah, Steiger comes from one of the first tractors I bought, though it was hardly big: early 70's Bearcat II rocking 200 non turbo HP from a smokey CAT 3208. But the AC worked so I was happy! Not sure yet if I'll take you up on the McMaster catalogs...gonna wait until I've explored all my free options first :)

DFB - Mostly looking for hand tool catalogs. Our farm operates on piles of ratty chinese tools and hard ridden USA tools from the 50's. Most of our "specialty" tools are home made or modifications. I've lately become known as the "I've got a tool for that" guy. But I need more!

I sent an email to Channellock and they say they're gonna send me a catalog. As far as tool truck stuff, as far as I know they only show up to the local John Deere once a month. Think I'll try ordering a catalog from their website. I've never seen another brand tool truck in the area. I think my Alcoa buddies had a Mac or Matco guy living on their lot, but the plant shut down a year ago so I wouldn't know where to find him now.

Thanks for the replies folks!

I think a lot of companies have gotten away from dedicated "catalog request forms" on their websites, but still might send one if you make a specific request.

I really want to track down a Stahlwille and other euro brands.

Northern tool has one that's pretty good to look through for things you didn't know you needed. Not as big as Grainger, but still useful.

Hmm...I wonder why they're such a big, consistent seller on eBay then. Older ones going for $100+:headscrat

Thanks for pointing that out, you are correct, I just checked out the completed listings for those catalogs and was very surprised, most going for around $50. And here I have been throwing them away all these years.

I had the same thing 35 years ago when the Snappy dealer refused my cash for a special tool. I ended up buying from the Mac dealer who was more then willing to take my cash. After that I never bought anything new from Snap-on and got all my Snappy tools from 2nd hand sources. :3gears:

Aircraft spruce and specialty will ship you a catalog. Lots of interesting tools and hardware.

I get the McMaster catalogs at work. Their website is the bomb, but a good catalog is a nice reference.

Most metal supply houses will provide a catalog or reference book that has all the various shapes and configurations you can buy sheet, bar and tube.

I do flip through the snap on catalog sometimes, as their website is terrible.

Maybe there's a "Show your catalogs" post on a forum somewhere...

LMAO! I've been lurking here at GJ long enough to see the humor in that!

Chromdome35 very nearly linked me the mother lode! Except they were out of Stahlwille and Hazet. Still ordered a few others.

Check out this site for some real interesting old tool catalogs, free downloads as well.

https://archive.org/search.php?query=subject:"tool catalog"

The Garage Journalwebsite isn't setup for storing large PDF's, so it would be difficult for anyone here to show their catalogs.

Anyway, you should make your avatar the tractor you described to me earlier. I still remember the first time I saw my first big green Steiger as a kid, it seemed as big as a house.

Last time I called they stated they only give out paper catalogs to users that have large orders or need serious support. As a small shop I was basically told sry best to check out our web site or the pdf version. :(

I think they are handing out less and less of them as their expensive to produce.

About 10-12 years ago my boss got a new McMaster catalog in the mail and promptly threw his old catalog in the trash. I told him that people would pay big bucks for them and he just laughed me off. I suggested that he check E-bay and within a couple of minutes he was rummaging through the trash for his old catalog.

Just a few of the catalogs I keep on my desk at work.. some get automatically mailed every year, the last few I've requested:

McMaster-Carr, Grainger, MSC Industrial Supply (huge catalog), Essentra Components, Lee Spring, 80/20, Starrett, Applied Industrial, Jergens Workholding, Carr-Lane Manufacturing,

I think I'm up to 7 McMaster-Carr's, all others get recycled when a new version arrives

I think the one lesson we've all learned here is to never throw out a McMaster catalog! Ebay or donate to a poor soul who was deemed unworthy

I've got one now on it's way thanks to a very generous GJ member.

Had to go ten years back to find those pics. The tractor is still here but parked and probably will never see field duty again. I keep thinking I eventually want to mount a front blade and make a snow pusher out of it. Compared to the Versatile 835 I ran at the time it was pretty small. But a Steiger Panther or Tiger, yeah you could almost live in those things.

I haven't had a Snap-on catalog for many years and this thread made me decide to send for one. I think the box it came in was overkill. A padded envelope would have been good enough, but it is a very nice catalog and more than twice as thick as the last one 30+ years ago.

They probably get a massive discount on shipping? Hence the box. But it does seem like a waste. SO must be a wealthy co.. lol

What's that awesome Mini in the background? What a beauty. I bet you get catalogs for Minis and Austin's?

There is another thr....
just kidding.

Wiha and Wera will send you one free. You just have to pay shipping, they have multiple catalogs. I was able to get Wiha's Insulated Product Catalog in a deal going through MSC, even got a T-Shirt.

So far I have.
GearWrench
Apex Tool Group master catalog
SK
Wright
Wilde
Matco
Snap-On
Channellock
Greenlee
Klien
Ridgid sent me a catalog, stickers and a hat.
Fluke
Fastenal Monthly deals list
Grainger
MSC
McMaster-Carr.

I had a Proto but it walked away.

Some companies have a page to where you can request a catalog, others just message them and ask if you can get a catalog. Worse they will say is no.

That's a '74 Austin Mini, right hand drive. Yes, I get a lot of catalogs, and you can get almost anything for them, but I only usually get stuff from about 3 suppliers, two being in CA. Two cars down from it is an 18,000 mile unrestored '69 TR6 in mint shape I just got in Aug.

Anybody been able to get a Proto catalog within the past few years? I've tried a couple times to contact Proto, but they keep telling me all they have is a PDF catalog, but somehow I don't believe that. Somebody's got to have a printed catalog.

Also, Williams/Bahco has an awesome catalog. It's a little hard to get, I had to email Snap On Industrial requesting one with my address. Never got a reply, just received it a few months later.
