If you're buying it from home depot or lowes I can tell you straight up where it goes...about 20% goes to the scrap pile because it ain't level.

Granted the quality is more than adequate for my use but professional or home users that care about such things means you're going to waste a bit of money (unless you use it for fire wood which might be an option). I just get the most level I can get without twist and I use every inch. I pretty much have to because I hand cut; I'll alter the specs on a piece simply to use the remainder of a board so I don't have to make another cut...because I'm friggin lazy.

Don't use power tools that cut because I have limited feeling in my fingers, don't really feel like cutting off my fingers. That's a different story and probably why it hasn't happened already.

mine all end up under the corners of couches, the short leg of the coffee table, computer desk, etc. The stubby left over bits and pieces and up in the fire pit for my grand kids to convert into "s'mores".

I do this with crown molding. I bought an 8ft piece the other day, of which I needed about 2.5 feet. There wasn't a thing left of that piece when I was done.

Always buy 4 more than you need, that way, you'll have 6 left over from the project.

I usually figure out how many I need and then buy 10 more than that. Some times I use every single one, other times I have a few extra. The extra get thrown up in the rafters to further dry out for the next project down the road. 2x4's are cheap, going back to the store because you did not spend another $20 on something that doesn't go bad and can be used for something else is silly.

I had to return my last truckload as none of them were 2" x 4".....must have been a shipment from Harbor Freight Lumber.

Obviously it depends on the size of the project, but I figure 1 stud per foot of wall, 16" O.C., gives you extra for corners, partitions, etc. AND unless you hand pick them, add 10% for unusable stuff!

thats the problem, i buy 4 extra then still need 6 more!:eyecrazy:

From now on get 10 extra. ;)

it never hurts to get extra 2X4s anyway. I usually have a couple laying around.

Someone borrowing a couple when you weren't looking? Wood piles seem to be fair game for some people. (AKA kids or thieves).

using more than anticipated. this is quite common as well.

I don't know how many you are getting but if you rally want to keep track take a sharpie and number them (put the number every foot or so on each piece). when they run out you can see if you used them all by checking the numbers in your project, or you can see the neighbors kids new fort is made from the missing pieces. or you can keep the lumber in a secure area to rule out thieves.
