I have to rebuild a snow plow, and need some steel to weld along the bottom of the blade. Where does one buy steel at reasonable prices? Home Depot has some, but prices are ridiculous.

Do you buy online? Local supplier?

Thanks

Local supplier. Used to be Pontiac Steel, but Alro is local to me now. McMaster-Carr can get you almost any type of material. Bought a 4'x4'x1" piece of PVC from them once.

Quick google search should get you list of local steel yards. The trouble you may run into are yards willing to deal with small orders/walk-in customers. Few phone calls will answer that question.

One nice thing is dealers here that sell small quantities also sell cutoffs (called drops) by the pound. Basically the leftover pieces from larger orders. If you're flexible on your project it can save some $$

I've bought a lot of steel from Pontiac Steel over the years, good experience all around. It's been a long time and I need to make a trip back up there soon, hopefully its the same people running it.

A lot of places that buy scrap iron also sell it. They tend to be cheaper than retail outfits, but you'll need to get a bit lucky to find what you need right away.

I was back there a couple of years ago, and it was still the same crew. I miss them, but I've moved. I loved to go through their drops for discounted stock.

I love used steel :) I used a old shovel I found in the back yard to patch up the rusted deck on my mower :D

Do you have a local road construction company or county highway department? They may have grader blade take-offs that are hard AF, that you can pick up for cheap.

This is above the cutting edge. The cutting edge is bolted to a hinged unit attached to springs. There’s some rot above the spring hinged unit that was not visible initially. On the main part of the plow. I’m guessing that’s why the guy sold it.

On the bottom of the main plow.

anything that's rather large & heavy is best found locally at a material supplier. Small stuff that's not unique in material, ACE, Menards, or Home Depo.
I've yet to find an online source to beat a local place for building a welder's table.

Don’t forget scrap yards. Some have trailers full of steel pieces.
Google “ steel near me” and see what pops up.
