Where do you buy your hardware? Online? Nuts/Bolts

I need to stock my Grade8 bolt bin and I also need to pickup some more automotive-type fender bolts and U-bolts.

Is there an online source you use for hardware? Fastened seems to demand a premium, McMaster is pretty reasonable, but are there any others out there worth checking out?

I'm a Bolt Depot guy. I have to pay sales tax on it but it's not too far from my office so I pick it up. It's always in labeled in individual baggies which is nice.

Do a Web search for discount hardware suppliers. If it's only a bolt or two, i use my local hardware. But, if I want to buy in small 100 piece lots, I use ebay and can usually get stainless at the cost of zinc plated bolts. My shop hardware supply rack has thousands of fasteners collected over the years and provides much convenience.

In the process of pricing complete hardware assortments from a number of local supply houses. One being Imperial which is part of Grainger, I know several people there who can offer me employee deals. As of right now, the stock room at work.

Bolt Depot or Amazon for online. Typically bolt depot but sometime amazon wins on price and shipping speed.

Local I use TSC for general quality bolts (I don't really trust their grade 8) the local Auto World for convenience or Thread of the South for really strange stuff.

I bought a Lawson cabinet off CL full of their grade 8+ tough torque bolts a couple years ago. Usually I can cover normal size SAE stuff from there, but a few need replenishing.

I scored a bunch of surplus ones a while back that were being thrown out from a machine shop clean out for free. But I still have to buy some from time to time but not usually in bulk. Only project specific ones or to replenish a certain size. So I just go to my local hardware store which is a True Value. This particular store is really good and the prices aren't bad. They even have lower prices if you by a whole box rather than one or two of something.

At work all parts are generaly ordered for the job and supplied by OEM. We obvisouly still maintain a large bolt and nut wall for general picking. At home though i have a couple of General Job (GJ) kits which have an asorment of graded fastners most commonly used. Most fastner and auto supply shops will sell them. I find these kits work great and only rarely will i have to go out and buy a particular size for a certain job.

I have a local fastener store that is use when I only need a couple of specialty bolts (3/4" and up, stainless, Grade 8, etc).

For small fasteners, especially nuts and washers, there are a lot of discount places on eBay. Several years back, I found a place on eBay that had FREE SHIPPING on fastener orders over $50. The poor delivery guy just about got a hernia delivering that box !

I don't stock any "bolts" (some machine screws up to about 1/4"D) because I just don't have the room

For general fasteners I am fortunate to have a Bolt & Nut Supply house nearby. For specialty or "oddball" fasteners and pretty much anything else I use McMaster Carr. Even for standard fasteners if I am already placing an order I will simply get them from McMaster Carr. That seems to be my go to materials and fastener company.

Random run of the mill nuts and bolts I get from the local Ace Hardware. Nails and construction screws I usually get from the lumber yard or HD/Lowes. Hard to find stuff I get at local place called Fastener Warehouse, which is just a larger version of a Fastenal. We had a Fastenal location here for a while but it closed a few years back and the closest location is a couple of towns over.

Grade 3 / zinc generic bolts: Coastal Farm Supply which is local and good enough when I need a few bits. Once a year or so they have a 20-30% off anything that fits in a 5 gallon bucket and they weigh bolts by the pound, so I can refill my cabinets that way.

Grade 8: I buy bolt combination kits from Ebay and Warren Fastenings South. 1/4" - 5/* assortments of fasteners, 1500 pieces, for $79.99 and FREE shipping. Considering when it arrives it's about 35 pounds of metal, that free shipping is very good.

I've tried Tractor Supply locally, but they don't stock bolts. It's a pretty poor store for what they offer. I don't recommend it. There's a new store nearby I have to check out and hope they have more stock.

Ace Hardware: I really like Ace for unusual fittings, connections, and fasteners. But they charge by the item and it can be expensive to stock your bolt cabinets.

Fastenall: Local store is happy to help you, and their prices are excellent- for Fastenall. I'm not about to pay the $4 a bolt they want. They don't price anything on the racks because the people that shop there are just using an account that is being paid for by someone else, so price is no concern. It's not a pleasant place to visit. That's the local store, so could just be that one store location.

TacomaScrew: Neat place, tons of connections, good locations and they are open when you need them. Just a bit too far between stores for me to go to. When I need a bolt, it's 2 PM on a Sunday when I'm working on a project.

I quit using Fastenal for my home shop a long time ago and we also don't use them at work unless it is an emergency (located about a block away) for this very reason. Way to expensive and they hope you don't ask how much something is. I noticed the same thing, most go in, ask for what they need and sign on the receipt. They don't even pay attention to the piece cost. One of these days they will wake up when they can't figure out where all of their profit is going each month. Directly into Fastenal's pocket.

I will admit, their grade2/3 seems to have gotten really cheap. I've started buuying either grade 5 or 8 when I refill.

Harbor Freight makes a cheap little plastic cabinet filled with assorted nuts, washers, bolts, etc.. I think it was $10 or so -- sure has saved a ton of trips to the local Ace Hardware over the years. It's small stuff though. For the larger stuff, I go to the local Ace Hardware or True Value.

I go to a local fastener supplier here in Austin called American Bolt. There are about 3 small providers plus the usual fastenal, grainger, etc... They are way cheaper than Fastenal, grainger or McMaster. But I have had situations where a guy I don't normally deal with will charge me 4-5 times the normal price when I'm getting a handful, so I compare to bolt depot or McMaster and raise the issue. They always make it right. They can also get me made in USA or not at my choice, depending on my order. I buy a fair bit of metric 10.9 grade.

I go to McMaster when it's something really bizarre.

I use a local place Northern Sates Supply, if they don't have it they will get it for me and their prices are very good.
Plus I like to support a local brick and mortar when I can.
