Where do you get your bolts?

A sad day (a couple years ago)....

Over the decades my depression era uncle who had done mechanic work and worked big construction his entire life, had saved all kinds of nails, nuts, bolts, screws, etc., he had them all stored in his basement "store" in cabinets and drawers, in the original box, or separated out and labeled in coffee cans, tobacco containers, glass pharmacy pill bottles, etc....

Well he passed before his wife and when she passed, she left the house and contents to her brother (not my Dad). When they were getting ready for the estate sale, my uncle, the executor, had someone come in to "help" him with the physical work. One of the things the helper did was to take ALL of those containers both small and large and dumped them into five gallon buckets. I happened to stop in while this was happening and about had a heart attack. My deceased uncle's life long collection of everything from minuscule screws from the insides of watches to big old 3/4" x 12" lag bolts were being dumped out so they could go to the scrap yard. :(

Well....I rescued them from going to the scrap yard but it will take me a few years (if ever) to get them all separated back out.

Thought for the day....

What will happen to your collections when you pass?

That is sad!

Post some pics of your efforts to save your uncle's collection.

I started a similar thread about what happens to your garage when you are gone. Interesting topic.

I use Albany County Fasteners for stainless and stuff not stocked at the farm store. Farm store sells import stuff by the pound. I’m sure it’s similar to what TSC is selling.

Local hardware store has a limited selection. I keep a good assortment of the stuff I use on hand. I rarely run to the store.

I don’t have a large hardware collection at home. I just keep enough to get by.
The ace hardware by me has the most complete selection of nuts and bolts I have ever seen.
If I need two I stop at ace and buy 4 to keep a couple extra at home.

I've bought a lot of fasteners from McMaster-Carr but since I tend to work on a lot of Hondas and Toyotas I have a need for JIS fasteners, especially flanged bolts. For those I use BelMetric. They have zinc and yellow zinc plated and if I want close to original fasteners, I usually get the yellow zinc. I know someone else mentioned BelMetric for JIS fasteners already but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

30 + years ago I worked in a where house assembling Japanese motorcycles. The bikes came in a crate that was bolted together. I kept tons of bolts that would have been thrown away. Now I get them @ Tractor supply because its the closest place around to get them.

I've started making my own out of 1/8 mdf for some items. The red bins are from Schaller Corporation.

cool thanks! I see they have a bunch of different sizes and depths. What are yours there? 2" depth? I have a bunch of 8.5x14x3 drawers in cabinets, but not sure I want to go 3" depth on smaller sizes since they may be tough to get small things out of the bottom
