Call your local welding supply and ask them if they know any of their customers that would sell material.

Looks to be a Praxair in your location.

I drive a small SUV and own a small (5x8') flatbed trailer. I buy my steel in full length and plate in full size. The problem isn't where to buy steel, it's how to get steelyard-sized pieces home.

One way to go is to buy a truck and spend boocoo bucks on racks, etc, not to mention insurance. I prefer to spend a little money on my car once.

I pay to have a front trailer hitch installed. Then it's easy to mount vertical outriggers which sit inline with the racks on top of my car. Then I can bring 20 or 21 foot sticks home easily. Here's a pic from 2007:

There's 800 pounds of steel up there. The outriggers take most of the weight.

aint much in gary except abandoned buildings and gunfire.

Ain't that the truth. Last time I made a mistake and slept when we were driving to Chicago. Wife missed the 65 exit and when I woke up we were in Gary. Ordered my wife to lock the doors and pull a u turn. Instead she turned down a side street to go around the block. At the second stop sign a couple of gentalman that looked like they didn't sing in the church choir started approaching the car.

I encouraged my wife to slow but not stop and keep on going. She had no idea that Gary was "that bad"

That is a great idea. I do wonder how you get it up there without scratching your car though.

The steelyard sets it up there with their magnetic overhead crane. When it's just right I tell the dock guy and he cuts the power to the magnet and the load settles onto the car. At home if it's too heavy for me to lift a stick, I use an overhead gantry crane to grab it. Usually I can safely pick up a stick and set it down on the ground without damaging my car or my old a** body.

I have used this setup with the vertical outriggers for about 15 years now and still haven't found a single shortcoming. For carrying a few 20' sticks, it flat out works.

I get mine from a semi-local place called "Sparta Steel". their prices are better than anyone else in the area. I could get better prices closer to Cleveland (Ohio), but it would cost me more in gas than what I would save on the steel.

There must be steel suppliers somewhere in your area? Hardware stores are not most cost effective way to buy it. Neither are the big box stores lime Lowe's/Menards/Home Depot.

I have a couple of choices of steel houses. We have one called Mofab, and another called Alro steel. Check your local area for a steel house that's close to you.

A local fab shop that does prefab pieces for skyscrapers and currently working on parts for a new bridge that's going up. Family friends for decades so I get everything at straight weight prices. Lots of cut offs and "scrap" to them I get nearly free.

I have a large steel yard about 45 minutes away that does daily delivery routes to the area. I can have a 3 foot piece of flat bar or a whole load of steel droped off at my house, call before 4 pm and it’s here the next day.

Fastenal. I found them online, and checked my zip code and there's a few of them nearby. Their price was less than half of Menards and Lowe's wanted for their steel. It was also a thicker gauge and longer too.
