Okay, since you seem unable to grasp this, let me try and put it in different terms.
Polls are useful when there are a small and
finite number of choices -- when you can enumerate
all possible choices.
Polls are pointless to ask open-ended questions like "where do you have your air compressor?". There are a million possible answers, and no poll on the subject is
ever going to be able to match the richness of the free-form written word. You'll get a better response, and you'll get a better answer.
Put yet another way: if you saw a guy using a hammer to torque the nuts on a cylinder head, you'd probably conclude that he had no idea what he was doing. Using a poll to ask an open-ended question is pretty much just like that.
