Yup I just spent a solid 5 days on my shop working 12-20 hours a day... finished at 4:00pm. I did move every single thing in the shop... rearrange... reorganize the whole thing. And about 6 hours was spent taking everything out of both my toolboxes, cleaning them then putting it all back into one so I can sell my big Matco box.
I still have a few big boxes and 5 gal. buckets of bolts to go through once I get a differant system to organize them with.

Don't you love how a small job takes every tool ya own to do. Or is it that we own all these tools and we just want to play with all of them. Just like when we were little kids I still hate picking up my toys. BUT MOM I'M GOING TO PLAY WITH THEM LATER LOL

sberry-Ive got 2 big work benches. One is in the basement and one is in the garage. BOTH are covered with ****. True be told I was able to clean up the one in the basement just enough to make space to work. I'd love to take everything off both benches and throw all the stuff in the trash can. The hoarder in me cant let that happen. For me cleaning my work benches is like the guys working on custom bikes on American Chopper. Its a slow process and I need go through everything with a fine tooth comb! So yeah.. I feel your pain.

I hate that when i get to that point that there is absolutely no place to set something down..........because of all the junk on the benches

it seams like i clean my bench off once a week. i think its the elves too. i dont rember getting the tools out but they are always there for me to put up.

I can't even remember what the top of my bench looks like - I think it's made of wood.

When I first started as a tech at a big dealership, I made the mistake of buying a roll-cab with no top box, not realising the attractive properties of ANY flat surface within a service shop.
I fixed that mistake pretty quick....

Flat surfaces get filled up if I'm around, kinda like one of the old Murphy's laws, a flat surface will attract all manner of stuff.

Great - Thanks.....just reminded me of what I have to do tomorrow. Will have to light up a cigar and get to work I guess.
The wife and I are both surface coverers. The desk in the living room, one particular counter in the kitchen nearest the door in from the garage, my desk in the basement, and the benches in the workshop are all covered to one extent or another. We manage to keep the table in the library open, and we've gone almost religious about keeping the dining table clear, but anywhere we work tends to pile up.
It's difficult. There are probably five projects' worth of stuff on my main workbench, including some air fittings from at least two different air projects, my small parts sorter thing, my battery chargers for my Craftsman power tools, some of those power tools, a disassembled computer power supply that I was extracting a capacitor from, a couple of soldering irons, a bunch of screwdrivers, electrical parts bought for various projects, an arbor press that needs to find a more permanent place, a benchtop drill press in a similar position, and a bunch of other stuff that I can't remember off hand.
A lot of it comes from my inability to find homes within the workshop for some of this stuff. Once I manage to do that then it'll be easier.
