Look for a dead used compressor with the correct motor. Otherwise your quoted price matches what I've found from places like Granger.

I spent time waiting and watching eBay for the right motor at the right price until I found what I needed.
It was a good price for a NOS motor in original box, but not cheap.

There is a guy in my state on Craigslist that rebuilds and sells electric motors. He didn't have what I needed in stock at the time, and he isn't close, but ......
Maybe there is one in your area.

I'll sheepishly admit that I bought a Chinesium replacement motor at Harbor Freight. This is one of the alleged "5 HP" 220 motors that barely pulls enough amps to make 3 HP, but that's all I needed anyway. So far, works great. Did a lot of media blasting with it and the motor was running at a very high duty cycle without skipping a beat.

Grainger is where you go when somebody else is paying.

Damnit Joe!!! I have to replace the start capacitor as of today. That’s what I get for bragging. I hope all of you had a merry Christmas.

Darn you! I just went there and bought their last 5HP Marathon 3450RPM compressor motor (for $180, but the $44 additional estimated shipping was a bummer) that I don't exactly need yet!

Yesterday I let some of the smoke out of my 3.xHP "SPL" motor on my 27-year-old compressor, due to it not wanting to start at all due to the cold temperature in the garage. I was 40' away from the compressor with hearing protection on at the end of the driveway using an air grinder, and I knew that the compressor should have kicked on while I was working. So I went into the garage and smelled that dreaded burnt-electrical smell! I let it cool down and hit the reset button and it worked again (for now . . .).

The Surplus Center website said that they only had one left of the Marathon 5HP (19A and my current motor is 15A, with the new motor being 15lb. heavier as well) motors so I went ahead and ordered it. It should have a bit more grunt to start the compressor at colder temps. I probably should switch to some synthetic oil in the pump as well, at least for the winter months.

Merry Christmas to me!

LOL, that's the exact motor I just pulled off my "6hp"/60 gallon. Comes out to 2hp if you go by amperage. Nothing wrong with it, I swapped in a bigger compressor and needed a bigger motor, long and painful story :willy_nil

I've had 3 motors rebuilt by a local motor shop, including a 1/4 HP Sears my dad said was from the 1930's. Other 2 were 1/2 and 2HP. non cost over $90 and have lasted for years.

On another note, I have a 30 year old Campbell-Hausfeld "Professional" 60 gal 240v air compressor. It says it's a 6HP motor, but the motor has no hp rating on it. I want to put a bigger pump on it as mine is getting weak and I would like more cfm. I just don't know if the motor is big enough to run a bigger pump, like the v-twin HF 5HP model( are these pumps any good)?

No way Jose! Your motor is already taxed-to-the-max - you'll burn it out for sure if you try to add any more load to it. You can confirm this by measuring the motor running current right before it shuts off at full pressure.

I have a similar compressor, an Ingersol Rand "5hp" from 1990. It's motor nameplate says that it draws 15A, and the new motor I ordered thanks to this thread (see above) draws almost 20A. So this motor has a bit more margin that I could use to run a slightly larger pump. It's still not a true 5HP, probably around 4HP. I'm sure it will have no problem starting my existing pump at cold temps. I also need to switch to synthetic oil, that will probably help a lot.

Thanks for the tip. Kinda what I thought.
