Where to buy octagonal sockets?

At school today I went to replace some high and low AC service ports on my car. I couldn't do this with a standard socket. My instructor had some sockets he got hundred years ago for me to use. I've NEVER seen octogonal sockets in my life, he couldn't remember how he came by said sockets so any idea where I can get some?

I assume you mean 8 sided? Anyone has them from Sears to Snap-on I have them in 3/8 and some in 1/2 use them to drain oil on some small engines that had a square drain plug

The OP isn't looking for regular 8 point sockets but rather the special octagonal sockets made for the R&R of A/C/ service ports. They were available from a number of sources: Kent-Moore, Mastercool, CPS, etc. Search eBay for Snappy's (probably rebadged CPS) ACTR900--the sockets are include in that kit.

I've got quite a few 8-point sockets. Let me know what you need. I could send you a few, and let you try them first. Then, if they work out for you, it would be your choice whether to buy them, or send them back and look for others at Sears, etc. Good luck!

I can assume that you're referring to a R-134 system, if so Matco has them.

NJ98134 for the low side
NJ98234 for the high side.

Bear in mind that these fittings are 8 sided to prevent easy removal. They come pre-coated with a permanent threadlocking compound so that once installed the system can never be reverted to R12 use.

You'll just round them off if you try to use a double-square 8 pt socket.

Those with experience know that 8 pt sockets are marginal for their obvious use -- square punched machine nuts. If you really have a need to use those dusty sockets, find a piano that need to be mis-tuned. They have square tuning pegs.

HA! I can't believe I was too dumb to search google. Guess yesterday was rougher than I thought.

Yeah what's odd is that the sockets my instructor used came from some generic R-12 to 134 conversion kit but my 95 ****** came w/ 134 (with hood stickers and all) so I was confused but 41 degree a/c soothes the confusion away.
