Where to Buy Shafting?

I've got a few little projects I'm working on where I need some shafting, 1/2" mostly. I can find it on Amazon or eBay but I cannot find it anywhere local. Tried Tractor Supply Co, Farm & Fleet, Big R. No dice.

What do people do when they need to replace a shaft on their tractor? They have tons of bearings and pulleys and gears but no shafts. It seems stupid that I can buy the pillow blocks and bearings, and some keyed pulleys for a shaft but I can't buy the actual shaft at any of those stores. What am I missing here?

machine shop or marine repair shop often stock this. price is usually decent.

Shafts arent usually an everyday wear item that needs to be replaced all the time. Look up local distributors for the manufacturer of your tractor.

I put in 'steel Peoria, IL' and came up with a bunch of hits. There are steel distributors in most city's. Be aware that you will be hit with with a few options on what material you want so be prepared. Maybe put up your intended usage here and the membership can help you with what you want to specify.

When you get done with the steel yard and see the sheer volume and variety of material they have you may understand why the corner store does not carry any. In addition most any shafting you get is going to need some modification and that is a headache for anyone not set up to deal with it.

Also if searching the internet try the term ROD instead of shafting

Bearing supply houses should have it. I don't know about 1/2" but I've bought a bunch of 3/4" and 1" from my local bearing supply.

Most likely you want to go to your local steel supply house. Without knowing what you're doing, I can't be more specific on alloy. Cold rolled will probably be in stock, as well as 1144 stress proof and most chrome-moly steels such as 4140.

Alro steel will have whatever you need, ask a machine or fab shop if they can throw some on the next truck.
