I beginning the rebuild process of my 1962 Airstream. The interior is held together with a few different sizes of flathead wood screws.

While disassembling the cabinetry, I was amazed at the quality and strength of the screws. I'm cleaning and reusing as many as possible. Even when beating on them with a hammer to loosen them, they still held the slot shape without getting chewed up.

Does any secret source exist out there that still produces screws with this hardness? I sure would like to score some!

Try your local mom n pop hardware stores. For example, near me we have a place called "the nutty bolt co" which sells all quality fasteners, chains, nails, etc.

Spax or GRK for wooden, Nucor for structural bolts and store brand for smaller machine screws/bolts.

If you have a Habitat for Humanity Restore near you, you might want to pop in. They frequently will have boxes of vintage screws donated from peoples garages. Of course, if you need it now, McMaster Carr or a local industrial hardware supply would be a good start. If you are specifically looking for slotted screws, again McMaster Carr may be an option, if not I know there are some US companies that still make them, for use in furniture restoration and reproduction. Unfortunately I don't know who or where they are available. If Popular Woodworking has an open forum, that might be a good place to ask. I know there are folks over there that deal with such things.
