Where to find storage cabinets, etc...?

New member here, just discovered this forum and it is great! My wife and I just got started laying out some new construction house plans, and the garage layout seems to have taken a lot of my focus, big surprise....

On another discussion I saw someone post some pics of Seville cabinets. Those look great, and the price is not bad. Can anyone suggest more places to find decent, lower price cabinets, storage ideas, shelves, benches, etc? I know Lista makes an endless supply, but that stuff is way out of my $$ range. McMaster-Carr is a little pricey, Northern/Harbor Freight might be a little flimsy, not sure. I would build some of it too, but my time/expertise are both limited on the woodworking front right now. I'd appreciate your input and experience on finding some nice garage outfitting sources.

Thanks, and looking forward to lots of cool ideas on this forum!

Take a look at both Sears and Lowe's, they both have Gladiator brand, Sears has their own and a few more. I have a Seville that I use as a mobil base for a bench-top drill press. Picked it up at Sam's club, very sturdy and it is holding up well. I have four Gladiator cabinets that Lowe's had on a close out sale a couple of years ago. These like the Seville bolt together, while sturdy, I think the Seville is a higher quality piece. I have four ignition parts cabinets that I acquired when I worked at a parts store. These work well and the price was one that couldn't be beat, free.

Good luck with your project, make sure to take some time and look thru the garage gallery section, lots of photos of what others did.

Second-hand (Craigslist, eBay) is how I went. I'd rather wait a while than pay full price for consumer-grade stuff.

But the flipside is that you can get it when you want it and all matching if you go with something like the Sevilles.

Yeah, it would be great to find a auto shop or industrial business that is getting rid of a bunch of stuff. I'll have to keep searching for stuff like that. The company where I previously worked eliminated their large machine shop (in lieu of farming-out parts, bad idea) and auctioned off pretty much everything but the machine tools to the employees. I sure wish I had more room back then, I got a great Lista cabinet w/maple top and some other stuff, but there was a ton more that would have been awesome to get my hands on.

So the Seville is pretty decent then? The reviews seem good. I can't believe I have never heard of them before. That's why I'm wondering what else is out there.

Unfortunately, machine shops have been closing their doors for a number of years now. Here in Los Angeles, there are places that buy up old shop inventory and put it on ebay. A lot of the time, it sells for stupidly high prices. But if you're patient there are bargains.

But in a more rural part of the country, there won't be the same amount of volume, and this isn't stuff you generally want to ship.

It makes sense to see if you can locate places that re-sell government surplus or simply deal in second-hand industrial equipment. My garage has a bunch of (Wisconsin-built) Strong Hold cabinets in it. I added up the retail once, and it was $6,600 without delivery charges. I got them all second hand and paid $690 for the lot. These things are made of 12-gauge steel and feel like a bank vault when you open and close them. I built wood soffit-style cabinets up above them, painted everything green, and added a strip of aluminum trim to dress the whole place up.

If you do a search on 'Seville' on this site, you'll find lots of reviews of the Sam's Club cabinets. People generally like them a lot.
