Where to get replacement air comp tanks?

I have this old Sanborn 3HP / 22 Gallon air compressor, it belonged to my grandfather so it kind of has sentimental value.

Long story short, the tank needs to be replaced (pinhole leaks).

Does anyone know where I can get a new replacement tank so I can just put my existing pump & motor on it?

The only place I've seen is mastertoolrepair, and I think the price was around $200-$300 (plus shipping)...

As you've found, the cost of a new tank is usually about the same as a whole new compressor. I've bought used compressors with a bad pump or motor for cheap (Craigslist or farm auctions) and used those. Much, MUCH more affordable.

I have researched and found a replacement part #Campbell Hausfeld USE AR040700CG which is a 20 gallon tank. The cost is about $150 plus shipping. I believe the shipping is around $70

I second the Craigslist recommendation. Possibly even putting a wanted ad on Craigslist asking for exactly what you are looking for. I have also been to a few pawn shops in the last few years that sell air compressors with bad pumps for about $10-25 each. People buy them all day long just for the wheels, tank, fittings, regulator, etc. I have seen many almost brand new looking tanks attached to worn out teflon lined pumps.

Craftsman use to sell that same compressor with their sticker on it, you might be able to find an older unit in better shape to steal the tank from so it will look origional....

Thanks for the link. I need to take apart the existing compressor since I can't tell how it is piped into the tank with all the cover panels on it, but fingers crossed that tank will be a pretty close replacement.

I really don't want to grab a used unit, unless it looks hardly used... which unfortunately everything I've seen on CL looks like they were worked hard and put up wet.

Your money, your choice, but if all you need is a tank, who cares? A well used tank is less likely to have rust than one that's been sitting, frankly. $10 for the inop compressor and a can of spray paint and you're good to go.

glad the link was helpful, I too am leery of thinks listed used since you don't know how they were cared for, draining, etc

I bought a used 20 gallon similar to yours off of craigslist and the tank turned out to be real rusty, noticed the paint bubbling on the welds on the edge. Decided to take it apart and am planning on mounting the motor and pump to my craftsman 30 gallon oil-less tank since I know the tank has been well cared for. The oil less units dont last long so I think it will be a good fit. Now I just have to find the time to put it together.

Well, already did that probably around this time last year when the other end developed a pinhole leak. Now that the opposite side has a leak I'm getting kind of leery about how much good metal there is along the bottom.

I'm always very diligent in draining air tanks, however my father isn't, and it appears my grandfather wasn't either... heh...

I'm not in any rush to get this back up and running, I have another portable oil-less (was a freebie) that works just as good, just loud as heck! I'll probably browse CL for a few weeks just to make sure nothing good comes up, and if not I'll splurge for a new tank and a can of red paint...

Take the attached picture for example, I just wouldn't touch that with a 10ft pole... If there is that much rust on the outside, the inside can't be in much better shape...

I had a 20 gal tank rust out after 18 years. I bought a used unit with a 30 gal tank. The tank had only light rust which I cleaned and then sealed by pouring in an epoxy paint mixture.
I would do this to any new unit I buy in the future. Cheap insurance.

Rust on the outside means nothing about the condition of the interior of the tank. Just like an extremely clean compressor may have severe rust inside.

Don't pass on a compressor due to a bit of surface rust. Check the interior of the tank or if thats not possible at least open the drain and see what comes out.
