Timely thread, we live in Mid-coast Maine, most of family is on the coast of NC. We are looking to retire soon to the NC, VA, TN area and this thread has given us something to think about. We would prefer to be in the mountains, not on the coast... too close to the humidity and hurricanes.

Tn has no income tax, reasonable property tax, no special property tax on cars like Georgia and other states have. Decent weather most of the time. Within a days drive of anywhere in eastern United states. Great scenery, 4 seasons that usually are mild compared to other areas. Not so much snow that salt rust your cars out fast. Great fishing, sports, golf, water sports with lots of lakes. Land prices are not outrageous in most areas. A lot of areas have easy building restrictions for shops etc.

You obviously chose "bust".

Heading to the Birmingham area next week and able to spend 4 days traveling. Will look to go north east. I spent time in Greenville with Lockheed and loved the area. A bit quiet but beautiful country.

Couple of options

Stay in beautiful house with perfect barn but be on the road away from family for weeks at a time

Sell everything and move to Maine or Southeast. House has been on tough NY market for over a year with terrible results.

Maine has been great but summer is over and we'll winter is coming hard.

I flew to Portland in February and it reminded me how freaking cold it was... I then rented a car and drove to Northern NB for a funeral...it snowed like a Mudder ....I came back o Portland 1 day before some huge Storm...Made me like NC a lot...those minus temps were brutal.

Charleston, SC is where I am born and raised...in a few years I have a feeling we will be moving up to the Upstate of South Carolina near Greenville. We may make it up to Asheville, NC. A lot of notherners come down to our area...that is how I met my wife.
