where to sell vintage craftsman tool.

Bought a 50's era craftsman shaper in a lot of tools. Its the only one i don't want to keep. No space.

Id rather not deal with the mouth breathers on craigslist. And between the tool and stand, it goes roughly two hundred pounds. So shipping would be stupid expensive.

Where would the best place be?

No offense meant. I don't think anyone on here would be the type like my call last night at 3am. About a set of wheels. That he lowballed me by 300 on. And then cussed me out when I wouldn't take his fifty bucks.

I also doubt you guys would do the cashier check scam. Or text repeatedly throught church time"wut u bottom dolla" and then get pissed when I didn't respond instantly.

Tbese are all examples from the last two weeks. I think im done selling on craigslist in my area. Hence the look for somewhere more appropriate.

You could alway try eBay with "local pick-up only" clearly stated in the description. Set a reasonable reserve and see if you get any bites.

Maybe the nostalgic haze or the heat is making me imagine things, but I seem to recall the local hardwood specialty shop had a notice board where you could post machinery up for sale. Is there a place that caters specifically to woodworkers near you?

Look for a woodworkers website that has a classifieds
Look for a local woodworkers place that takes things on consignment.
Ebay, with local pickup only listed
Yard sale. If not yours find a friend that is having one.
Does your town have a woodworkers club?

I figure I have 40 bucks in it. 3/4 horse shaper from the 50's. Needs a belt and thoroughly cleaned up. Its on a fabricated stand made out of 3/8 plate steel and angle iron.

Just don't have space.

And I didn't know that there were classified ads here. Never noticed them.

I guess since I brought it up here, ill post here first. Then see if they will let a new guy post on ncwoodworkers.

I have good luck selling on Craigslist. I use a yahoo email address and a cheap prepaid phone. The phone is only powered up when I have something listed, and the ringer goes to silent when I do not want to be disturbed.

Unfortunately for the OP'er, the GJ Classified's require a minimum of 100 posts in order to list items for sale. There was a problem with scammers joining the site just to hunt for victims. The minimum ensures that the members get to know the seller, and encourages participation rather than looky-loo's (I'm not including the dusterbd13 in that comment).

As Hawk has said, some of the members nearby you might be interested. If they read this thread, they can PM you through the site.

Blablabla description, $40 FIRM. I am neither stupid or desperate. In some ideal world it should be worth $200. If you ask about, or try to negotiate price it will $80!!!

DB: this isn't usually permitted so don't make a habit of it, but that is a cool tool and wish i was closer and i'd take it off your hands. it doesn't take long to get to 100 posts even if you read a thread and just say you liked it if you did or ask a question if you have any. then you can post up in the GJ classifieds. we don't let members with less than 100 posts use the classifieds because there were too many spammers.

In general, I'd be against trying to sell in the general forum. There are rules for reasons.

But in this case, I'm ok with the poster just putting it out there for the members. He isn't asking an outrageous price, isn't really soliciting business, and he's only asking just enough to pass it along to another member who would appreciate it and who has the room to keep it.

As long as this doesn't become a track record, I think he should be allowed to make the offer. JMHO

The deal with listing a Shaper on CL, you have less punks to worry about contacting you than a set of rims. It's a specialized machine and not a lot of people even consider using them these days so that narrows down the mouth breathers significantly, you only have to worry about the spammers.

Spell out your contact info, instead of typing numbers for the phone number use words and make them work for it. That will further narrow down the problem people.

The other tools are shown in my table saw restoration thread. The other two went to my best friend after I cleaned them up so I could get my craftsman 150 drill press.

My friends call my shop"Crawford's home for wayward power tools". I enjoy the hunt and resto. Only keep select pieces for me, and then only ones that will earn their keep.

If hawk doesn't want it, I will pm you.

Well, to be honest, almost all the tools from a few weeks ago found new homes except the craftsman drill press.

My shop irritated me too much and I gutted it for a major overhaul. At the same time i figured out that the deck needed rebuilt. So....

No vintage tool work for me, unless its using them in the current projects.
