Where do you guys get your garage doors? Home Depot/Lowes? direct from the manufacturer? Online?

I will be needing to order my doors soon and am trying to get some quotes together. I'm hoping to find a vertical lift door in a 16-18' width, 8' tall.

Ankmar is a national chain I believe that is owned in part or maybe in full by Chamberlain. They make a nice steel insulated door.

I looked for a local guy. I asked neighbors for a recommendation. The most important thing. I spent the time to chat with the guys that came out to give me a quote.
Found a great guy that did a perfect job.

Last time I needed a garage door I looked at all the home centers then stopped at a local reputable garage door company that sells and installs. They were less money installed than I could buy a similar door elsewhere. Pretty much ended that!

Thank you everybody. I work in procurement, so I normally deal with the manufacturer direct. I wasn't sure if I could just call up Wayne Dalton and order! When I checked the big box stores all I saw was big money custom things, not just "Plain White Shop Door" I'll start making some phone calls and see what I find out.

I got my Clopay from HD and very happy w/ the door and the install. I didn't think to check w/ a local door company so could be I paid too much.

The big name companies generally have distributors all over the US. When I built my garage, I went to the local Overhead Door facility, bought the doors, and they delivered them to me.

I shopped around and bought a Midland garage door. Nice door, nothing fancy. They will do windows and what not, plus the manufacturer is right in the area.

I also always do someone local. Easier to deal with someone face to face in my opinion. Any issues are usually easily remedied, lots of times they will deliver and install for little to nothing, and when there is a problem down the road they are usually much more willing to help than if it came from somewhere else.

Sometimes the little extra it might cost to stay local is worth it.

Let your fingers do the walking, look in the Yellow Pages and then visit the shops that sell and service the doors. The installation and service are what are the determining factor for me.

A funny note, our local Yellow Pages got mailed out recently. All of about 3/8" thick now! Talk about a failed business model!

Oh I don’t think the Yellow Pages is a failed business model...it’s just technology that came into play. Horse n buggy was great until the automobile came along.

The thing is, you could look in the Yellow Pages and get a result in seconds, but do an Internet search and unless you use just the right words, the first 20 pages will be filled with links to something besides what you're looking for.

Menards sells Ideal which is a Clopay company.
Priced an Ideal door custom build door at Menards 8’x7‘ door was $2400. Yes, there are $400 to $5000 doors in the single door size.
Few years back purchased a Clopay from HD…..they subbed the install to the local garage door shop. Turned out installed doors was are NOT taxed……..so ended up that install was free vs DIY install are sales taxed. Plus they carried the old one way.
Note you may have to wait………talked it a builder the other day he waited 8 months for a recent build.

as far as yellow pages………

Buy local buy from pro tradesman, you’ll ALWAYS come out ahead. EVERY BRAND has **** “most popular/builders grade” and mid grade up to top end in both the door construction quality, the HARDWARE (overlooked not frequently used as a selling point), and finally aesthetic design. All climates/regions benefit from well insulated garage doors specifically POLYURETHANE insulated door with a THERMAL BREAK. The thermal break narrows the field, only the National mfr’s can do this and polyURethane. R value is “subjective” at best. 1-3/8” urethane door r value 12 consistently 2” r 16-20 but either way you get steel front steel back interior filled every nook & cranny with dense foam. = quiet, smooth, long life door sections.
Next hardware standard no matter high end price or low the mfr’s load with Cheap 18 gauge hinges, single spring normally (galvanized, not great), all above mentioned items are rated for 7-10k cycles. Ask for 14 gauge hinges, 13!!!!! 13 ball bearing nylon rollers (125k+ quiet cycles) and no 10-11 ball aren’t the same. Two car garage door you want TWO oil tempered torsion springs rated for 20,000+ cycles. Then have those springs readjusted one year later after install and check balance twice a year there after to gauge when due for “service call” (18-24months interval is typical). Don’t buy chamberlain opener avoid Liftmaster if possible, GENIE PRO (2128/3120/6170) (may end in BH or other Battery backup or multiple remote different packages but the above is the important part)
genie = 24VDC strong long life safe smooth plenty of torque motor with a belt you’ll love for the next 2 decades plus.
chamberlain/Liftmaster: best case 12VDC motor kinda weak, service/replace prone… or typical a/c motor with nylon transmission to strip out every 5-7 years.
All door industry is affected by covid common to see 8-20 week leads, so what I said may go out the window if you have no choice. But under ideal buying circumstance this is solid advice.

Yellow Pages? I haven't seen those in easily 10 years.

I bought Clopay doors from a local dealer. I wanted them insulated, with flat panels inside and out, and high lift that follow the sloped ceiling. They worked with Clopay and had them engineered. Their price was better than I could find elsewhere. They also installed them and did a great job. I had a minor issue and they came out to fix it right away. Strongly recommend a local installer.

I second (or 3rd or 4th or 5th) the check with your local guys. Over the years we have probably bought 8 or 10 doors from our local guy among the local extended family all with the same last name. When my shop garage door was basically torn off by thieves, they made me a priority because my shop was unsecured. The new one was installed the day it came in to them. Having that local relationship is a good thing

The home center's seem to have doors that are thin skinned that will strip out the screw holes. I just bought one and there doesn't seem to be any structure in the screw area.

I will try a door company next time.

Since this got brought up, I think Wayne Dalton's website has a dealer locator on it.

There are "Garage Door" companies.
This. Shop or garage doors? I've had a lot better luck with the companies that do shop doors than residential. The residential garage door co (here) outsources their installs to 3rd party installers - we had to have the manufacturer come out twice.

It's best if the dealer who sells the doors is also directly responsible for the install. No question on warranty that way.

I ordered mine through a local garage door company. They quoted Chi doors. 8-10 week lead time, which really took 12 weeks. I finally got them installed last week. They look to be very good quality doors and operate very smooth.
