Where to store my "stuff" during an epoxy flooring project??

I'm planning to epoxy my garage floor this season. That means that I will need to have my garage completely empty for a week or more while I do the prep, coatings, and then cure time.

For those of you that have gone through this before, how did you store all of your garage kept items? Certainly I can move the smaller stuff into the basement, but items such as my 1500 lb lawn mower aren't going to make it.

I don't know the neighbors well enough to ask them to store my stuff.

I did some quick research on the "PODS" style portable storage rentals and they are so expensive! The rental cost of the unit itself is actually very reasonable, but they kill you on delivery and pickup.

Any other options you could suggest?

I epoxied my garage before I moved in. Makes it real easy. Then a year later I needed to redo the urethane top coat and the garage was FULL. I boxed everything up like I was going to move and parked it all on the side of the house. The heavy stuff like table saw and belt sander and benches were rolled out on the drive way on cheap Harbor Freight dollies and covered with tarps until the work was done. Was a lot of work but what are you going to do?

I will be getting mine done soon enough and thought about renting a large u-haul truck or using the POD's system they offer.

do half the floor at a time, its easy to do it that way especially if you have a expansion cut down the middle, just tape it off.
i did my barn like that

See if there is a SmartBox in your area. I used them for storage when I did my garage last year. They were about half the cost of Pods and their price included drop off and pick up. I got a huge cheap tarp from HF and covered the mowers with it. I put all the important stuff in the SmartBox container.

unless you are in a bad neighborhood, could you just put it all around back of the house, cover with huge tarp and leave outdoor lights on all night?

I have two suggestions for you.

Many times you can rent a U-Haul truck fairly cheap. If you can fit all your stuff into a U-Haul truck, I suspect the cost would be minimal since you won't be traveling very many miles and you will be taking the truck back to where you rented it from. It is also possible you may be able to rent a used truck from a car/truck dealership. Not saying to rent a new vehicle, but maybe you could rent a used one for a few days. Any type of enclosed vehicle that you can put all your stuff in while you work on the floor should work out good for you.

If there is a storage place nearby you may be able to rent a space for a week. generally you rent the space by the month, but if you ask about it you MAY be able to rent a storage unit for a week. But even if you have to rent it for a whole month, the cost should be fairly inexpensive. I realize this may prove to be a little difficult if you have heavy items to move and store, but regardless of where you finally put the stuff it will have to be moved out of the garage and put somewhere.

I once moved a friend and the closing on the new house was delayed 7 days, but the old one had closed already. We just parked the truck loaded on a friends place and it sat for a week. we didn't have much of a choice, but I don't remember it being that expensive.

Look into a uhaul truck, should be cheaper with no miles on it, as it's not actually going anywhere.

I've decided to build a shed roof off the side of my garage (over an existing concrete pad) to put my things while I finish up the floor. I'll use it later to store my boat.

I did half the floor at a time. Once the first half was dry, I moved everything over, scuffed the edge and then did the other half. You can't even tell that it was done one half at a time as it looks seamless. I used EpoxyCoat and that was their recommendation as well.

Hey Homerguy, we are doing a full house remodel and I am tearing down my existing garage....with a demolition starting in a few weeks and the building of my new 18x30 a week or two after that...finally...but, I am sending my project car off to a buddies garage, along with my dirt bike and then using rubber maid containers for tools etc. More directly though, we are using a POD (16x8x8) for the contents of my existing garage and stuff from the house as well. The POD prices out at around a $200 per month taxes in. As you mentioned, we are then paying approximately $50.00 to have it delivered and $50 to have it taken away. Remember, I am in Canada, so taxes etc are likely a lot more (HST 15%) I figure they bring it to my site and I roll stuff down the driveway to the yard and it is in the POD. It was for this reason that we chose not to go off site storage...which was cheaper but not as convenient...hope this helps a little
