Bumper jack? I guess since they dont put 'bumpers' on vehicles any more you'd better sell it to an antique shop...

Looks like an old school version of the Ari-Hetra jacks. (With the bumper attachment.)

EDIT: Which, might I add, are awesome.

That thing looks awesome! If you can get it cheap, BUY IT!!!! I would.

Anyone ever rip off a bumper with one of these? Or have a vehicle fall off one? It doesn't seem real safe.

Used them for years (air style) and never dropped a car off. I had a large one in my shop for working on large trucks. They use to have ears that slid into the bumpers on 60s 70s where the bumper jack slots were. I can see some guy showing up in a restored 442 olds and running out and shoving that jack into the bumper slots. Better have a Defibulator or Kevlar vest ready, lol

Damn, and it's a Blackhawk, too!

I once used the factory bumper jack on my '69 GTO back when I was a youngster. It started deforming the slot in the bumper where you were supposed to insert it. I decided that day that cars were not meant to be lifted by their bumpers.

So, are these "bumper jacks" actually lifting by the bumper, or by the framerails?

I had one of those......worked damn good on older cars and trucks. Key thing to remember when using one.....is leave the vehicle in neutral so it can "roll" as it's lifted...if ya' don't it will kick it out from under it..

They can be quite handy. I've used them for doing trailer bearings before, that was the cat's meow!! also used one to remove the front axle from an old N series ford tractor.

How high will these take the front (or back?) of a car up? Too high for jack stands as a backup, I assume?

Yep your typical Blackhawk Bumper Jack, I had one very similar that i sold. I used mine for removing solid axles on my Chevy trucks back in the Day. Its nice to be able to get under the truck and work without Jack stands getting in the Way. They have "Dogs" that catch as its lifted to prevent it from falling if there is Hydraulic failure while under load.

I suspect somewhere in between 2-3 foot for that model.

Steve, do you feel that these are relatively safe, then?

I would definitely need something else under the car, as a backup. But these things pop up on CL fairly frequently and since I work on old Pontiacs with full frames, maybe I would actually find one useful....

Safe? Absoulutely.. They where intended to be used for Tire/Brake work on Trucks, Where you could work on both sides with ease. I would never suggest putting one on both ends of a vehicle and using it as a Lift nor working under it without some stands in the Middle.

I seen one on tv where instead of lifting on the bumpers, it has a piece that fits into a trucks reciever hitch.

If your not going to use it as a bumper jack, I have seen these modified with some channel welded to make a platform, so you can work on a motorcycle, or a riding lawn mower on at a comfortable working height. If it can lift an ole buick, it can certainly lift a john deere lawn mower to work on, or a Honda motorcycle.
