Where would I buy a thin file ?

I need a flat file that when it's laying flat would be about 3/16 high and 3/4 inch or less wide. I will be using the side of it to "broach" a square slot inside a water pump impeller...using a back and forth motion.

I restore vintage outboard motors. The impeller I need is rare and costly. An exact impeller is available but the keyway slot is the rounded shape for a different style shaft key. I will modify the shape of the impeller slot using the file I'm looking for.

I have seen files in the Grainger catalog but they are described in file sizes, but not the physical dimensions. Somebody told me to use jeweler's files ? Anyway I need suggestions where to look for the file I need or perhaps a small selection of files like a set.

I have a Nicholson file that's about 5/8 wide, 1/8 thick and 8" long, it came out of my locksmithing kit, prior to that I don't know,
But the brand may be able to send you in the right direction

I have several of that size or a little thinner that I found at a small engine repair place. They all have Husqvarna stamped on them. Maybe try a chain saw sales / repair place?

A file only cuts on the push stroke. You can quickly dull it pulling back on it. Always lift on the return stroke. Another option would be to have a machine shop broach the keyway if it is in a through hole. Shouldn't take them more than a few minuites or be very expensive to do.
