Hinsdale 1/2" drive 45/64" (cuz you never know when you are gonna need ye ole 45/64" in a pinch) i have had a 57/64" herrbrand extra deep socket before but aside from the 2 i have never really seen 64ths.

Along with the 7/16x3/8" double open end wrench is my entire hinsdale collection - it is therefore up for sale lol (along with the walden there....) let me know if you are interested, im sure it is a rarely found... And probably rarely sought after socket.. Pretty cool though, i am very unfamiliar with either classic manufacturer

These HW wrenches have been bugging me all day

I have HW3, HW4 and HW5

After converting the sizes to mm and consulting charts on the web the answer is pretty plain to see.......

I believe the "set" is HW1 thru' HW6 and they are Whitworth wrenches made in the run up years to WW2, they are plated and stamped Chrome Vanadium. QED

As first reported on the 2020 Garage Sale thread, I picked up this Hinsdale TL No. 20 set at the flea market this morning.

attachment.php

We've seen some spectacular sets on this thread (Unaiu's Chrome Nickel master mechanics set in the hip roof box, CRTDI's 9/32-drive set in the funky vertical holder, and midnitemack's classic 1/2-drive set in the attache case all the way from NZ leap immediately to mind, among many others...), but I don't recall seeing one of these TL sets.

It cleaned up carefully well, and as you can see, there was just enough of the paint remaining on the case and the lid to know that it was the classic enameled green of the early 30's.

The T-L bar with the forged-in stops and the sliding T-H handle fit well together in both the L and T positions. See Pics 3 & 4.

I have seven (7) of the original sockets, all 6-point, all 1/2-inch square drive. I couldn't find a catalog reference for a No. TL-20 set, but based on the sets that are shown in the catalog, and the size of the case, I am probably missing the 3/4", 11/16", and 5/8". No model numbers. See Pic 5.

The T-L bar itself, which has a badly twisted drive stud, is not branded, but the T-L sheath is, and it's also marked "TL-1". See Pics 6 & 7.

Here is a catalog reference for what I believe is the same set (same case, same TL handle, and probably same number of sockets based on fit), but for some reason, it was called set No. TL 10 at this time. Whereas the one I just found is Set No. TL 20.

...and some more shots of the handle and the sockets. See thumbnails.

Thanks, Otg. That's the exact same listing from the catalog I posted. My set is a No. TL-20. There is no rhyme or reason to Hinsdale's numbering scheme. It's not number of pieces. I'm just wondering what the difference between a No. TL-10 and a No. TL-20 would be, since there doesn't appear to be any.

I have some Hinsdale spares similar to those. I’ll check when I get back to the Bay Area.

According to the ad , it has 20 possible combinations
I saw that. And that's interesting. But if you're implying they changed the set number (from TL-10 to TL-20) to reflect that at some point, it doesn't scale across their product line. Take your 12BR, for example. With a TL handle and a ratchet, there are three combinations (T turning, L turning, and ratcheting) for each of the 8 sockets. Is there a Set No. 24BR like yours out there? See what I mean? In other words if there was evidence that the number of combinations between handles and sockets was the set number, I think we would see that on other sets. Thanks, though.

Thanks. I need 3/4, 11/16, and 5/8. It's funny, I thought fore sure I might have some, too, but nope. Some Bog, MTF, Blackhawk, and lots of Duro, but no Hinsdale orphans.

Took pictures of a speeder today to put on ebay, it's last chance before it goes in the scrap metal bucket. It made it 80 years or more, then somehow got separated from the herd so is about to be culled, unless it can find the rest of the herd to hang out with again, and a good home!

Is this in fact an early Hinsdale H-3 double female 1/2” drive universal joint, and if so, is it a fairly common item, and could anyone use one for their kit?

Thank you !

I found a new indoor flea market yesterday and they had this partial (what I assume to be) Hinsdale 119 refrigeration set. I don't have any catalogs and the bits I have and the box seems different than OTG's set HERE. Anybody know what should be in this 119 box?

Current contents:
MZ1,2,3,6 (9/32" drive)
SM7,9,11 (9/32" drive)
SOM6,7,8,10 (9/32" drive)
RF41 1/4" to 3/8" adapter
unmarked 1/4" to 9/32" adapter

I've had this No. G20 Hinsdale box for so long that I've forgotten where it came from.

IMG_7537.jpg

IMG_7538.jpg

It's interesting that it was put together without any spot welds. The corners and inner partitions are assembled with bent over tabs and the hinges are pins pushed through pooched up metal.

I should have said embossed only lids (of the 50's), since the 30's were embossed and had stickers. Actually, maybe they were embossed with stickers in the 50's too and my sticker just came off. See page 1 post #10.

No missing link there. We've known about them for about 10 years now. :D

These are really cool pieces. The machining required to make them work was fairly sophisticated for their time.

If you wouldn't mind, hang onto that one.

I've been coordinating with Craftsman C-Series here to temporarily bum his 1/2" Craftsman Vanadium ratchet, since his is a bit nicer than mine. Unlike the Miss America contest claiming their show is a "scholarship program", mine is a beauty pageant.

I am curious. Would you consider allowing me to use your tool set for my Craftsman Vanadium video? I'd need it for no longer than 3 days. :D

I am guesstimating 1942-1943 on this. The pieces are natural steel finish. After 1943 that CHROME VANADIUM marking would've gone away. I am extrapolating the model numbers for the missing sockets and 8-inch extension based on the sockets I have and the 5-inch extension. There are no Hinsdale catalogs that I know of in the public domain. If anyone has any good period references (ads, etc), please post them.

The ratchet has an unusual marking – ‘HF’, with the two letters forged together, in between the CHROME and the VANADIUM on the flip side. Does anyone know what it means? Hinsdale Forged? Has anyone seen another one?

H12J Ratchet
HXJ5 5-inch Extension
SJ14 7/16
SJ16 1/2
SJ21 21/32
SJ22 11/16
SJ28 7/8

Missing:
H5J hinged handle or HXJ8 8-inch extension (there's only a holder for one more handle)
SJ12 3/8
SJ18 9/16
SJ26 13/16

Private Lugnutz
It looks as though I have the same set that I inherited from my grandfather. The ratchet even has the same HF in the handle. It too is missing some pieces that I would love to find.

If anyone has any leads it would be greatly appreciated.

Wanted:
SJ14 7/16" 3/8" drive socket
SJ18 9/16" 3/8" drive socket
H5J Hinged Handle
??? Extension

Wanted:
SJ14 7/16" 3/8" drive socket
SJ18 9/16" 3/8" drive socket
H5J Hinged Handle
??? Extension
Good luck on that. I have found a few more pieces and traded for another since posting that. I don't shop on eBay, generally, only as a last resort, or if someone tips me off to something really special, but you might get lucky with someone else finding some pieces or a partial set and selling it there.

Hey gang, while sorting through the sockets from last weekend, I found a Hinsdale SOM-12, which seems to be a 9/32" drive 3/8" square socket. Its in rough shape, lots of rust on the back side, some on the front. Holler if interested, won't clutter the thread with ugly pictures.

Update, socket is spoken for.
