I may be needing a super low profile drill for a job I need to do and may have to bite the bullet and get one. I am looking at the Souix 1AM1551, are there any other good brands to look into for these? Thanks in advance.

Do you really need a new one? There are a lot of good used ones around, mainly from vendors who deal in used aviation tools. Here's one.

Dotco is one of the best out there, and they can be rebuilt if necessary.

Before you go out and buy one, Check at your local Airport and ask where the Mechanics get their air tools. When I was still working at LAX, somebody always had stuff for sale.

I have a Sioux and a Dotco, but I've seen people drill a million holes with the Air Capitals (under $200 new).

I have a dotco. With short drills you can fit in a space less than 1". It has fairly good "grunt" for a small air tool. Of course I only use it on sheet metal and up to maybe 1/4" holes.

Another vote for Desoutter. There are a huge range available, and, like much of the more specialised tools, they are a great buy secondhand! Try to get a British made one though!

Dotco are superb as well, but are probably better known in the U.S. which means higher prices used!

Most of all these kick *** drills go for dirt cheap on ebay all the time. Not a huge demand which is good for the buyer.

How would one go about doing that, given today's state of heightened security at airports?

Simple..... You find out where the workers go to lunch, be polite and ask where they are getting their air tools. I don't know where the OP lives or what Air Port is local to him, but even small Air Ports have Mechanics that go out to lunch. Key here is never be a Jerk.... they will be on limited time and it may take a couple of times of asking. Somebody is always Retiring.
On another note, the "Angle" heads take a real beating, so take a 1/4-28 bolt with you when you look for a used one to check for wobble.

Follow the guys from the airport to some lunch place and then approach them, more than once. That doesn't sound particularly "simple" to me. Sounds a little creepy.
