That's a question that can range from $20 to $200,000; depending upon the members who respond..
It works best to discuss each tool; one at a time.
This is the only way This Forum can: justify, crucify, cross examine, polish, endurance test, locate, cuss, discuss, praise, ponder, pawn, bend, break, warranty, buy, sell, dream, ream, finance, or glance...
Doing this one tool at a time, and having the tool survive the scrutiny of the Garage Journal Tool Forum will yield tools worthy of Your procession.
Doing this in major assortments will yield so many brain farts and bull that the EPA will have no choice but to shut us down.

I submit a motion to make this thread said sticky...
Quality over Quantity, lots of quantity however one spends all their time replacing broken junk tools. Was told that years ago, seen lots of guys buy cheap tools and have injuries that resulted in being out of work or permanent injuries. Lifetime warranty is useless when someones hand is mauled up from a defective Chinese made junk.
Jeez, what kind of "junk" Chinese tools that led to time off or Permanent injuries?

no no no.... Tool Shop brand from menards
China made breaker bars, sockets, wrenches, when stuff breaks people get hurt. If it is in a shop then it has to be reported. The list could go on and on. The track record speaks for itself. Another good one is the pry bars that leave shrapnel, no thanks will spend the extra money. One having their hand sliced opened yes that does leave an injury most likely like other always come back.

It is a matter of opinion. The purpose off the post is to get people's opinion. Yes, I could have looked for other posts where one or two tools are discussed, but like someone has said it takes time to go through all of the posts. It would be nice to have a thread where people can vote on which tool they feel is best for them. That would be worth being a sticky.

in all seriousness, I wouldn't choose just one brand of tools.
For my liking, I'd go with Snap-on wrenches and chrome sockets, Cornwell impact sockets, ratchets, and pry bars, I like Mac for thier tool carts and a few other speciality tools, and finally I'd go find the best used Snap-on Tool Chest and Roll away I could find on Craigslist.
Oh and Channellock, knives and Klein for pliers and other stripping/grabbing tools.
My 2 cents + a few more to adjust for inflation.

USA tool steel along with reputable manufacturer has standards, metal quality and if one works on commission it is different. Overall the track record of tools from China speaks for itself.
Something about 'fine china' and high rpm's, and other items does not instill confidence. The big vendors do have some lesser quality tools, but speaking of overall long term/years of service. USA branded tools are superior.

Been beating mine to death every day for 5 yr now. Best $10 I ever spent, to hell with $200 on the truck.
That being said 99% of the rest of my tools are truck brand

I think what he was asking but didnt come out right is what are the best tools for particular categories. Like sockets- snap on pliers klein. Etc. Unfortunately there is no definite best tool for each category. Its all a matter of opinion.

WalMart for everything else.
That is not fair! Do not put K-Mart on this list! I have an 80's K-Mart socket set that was made in Japan and is really quite decent! K-Mart is also very consistent! I went in there a few weeks ago and the store looks the very same as it did back in the 80's! I do not like change. K-Mart really did used to have some decent value products, back in the day. Man, how I miss the 80's. The world was a simpler place back then. Music was much better too! - Paul
