Which breaker do I need?

Hooking up my engine hone today hopefully. I'll be running it to a phase converter. Can anyone tell me from the information on the tag which breaker I will need. I think I need a dual pull 20 or 30 amp but that is just a guess.

Thanks in advance.

You need a 3 pole breaker, a 15 or 20A would be acceptable assuming you have 240V power.

Is the phase converter static with an idler motor? If so you might need to go with a 2 pole 30. But you'll most likely be fine with a 2P 20

I guess we really need to know if you need a breaker to feed the phase converter, or if the breaker is between the phase converter and your engine hone. I assumed the latter but now I'm not sure.

I might be a good idea for you to explain your set up a little more. That way you can get it wired up correctly and safely.

I guess I'm getting a VFD for a 3hp motor. The motor it will be running is 2hp but I was told to go a little higher.

That's a much better choice then a static converter. Your connected load for single phase (appx 10 amps running load) will be fine with a 20amp 2 pole since you're starting loads will be easy on that motor for the hone. Is the hone a mechanical drive or hydraulic conversion? My rod hone is electric / hydraulic so my motor starting load is nothing compared to something like a air compressor.

Good luck and it'd sure be cool to see your set up when your done. I love checking out home shop motor builder stuff.

A word of warning about cheap no-name ChiCom VFD's, the sellers have a reputation of minimal to no support after the sale.

Very cool.
Thank you. I'll get some more pictures up when I get it cleaned up and running.

Thanks for the warning. I actually went with this one because my uncle has one running his lathe at his shop. It's been going for 3+ years now with no issues so fingers crossed I have the same luck.
